Alaska: Palin flip-flopped on 'bridge to nowhere' By TOM KIZZIA - When Sen. John McCain introduced Gov. Sarah Palin as his vice-presidential running mate Friday, her reputation as a tough-minded budget-cutter was front and center.

"I told Congress, thanks but no thanks on that bridge to nowhere," Palin told the cheering McCain crowd, referring to Ketchikan's proposed Gravina Island Bridge.

But Palin was for the bridge before she was against it.

The Alaska governor campaigned in 2006 on a build-the-bridge platform, telling Ketchikan residents she felt their pain when politicians called them "nowhere." They're still feeling pain today in Ketchikan, over Palin's subsequent decision to use the bridge funds for other projects -- and over the timing of her announcement, which they say came in a predawn press release that seemed aimed at national news deadlines.

In 2007, Palin announced a change of course -- just a month after the Arizona Republican slammed the Ketchikan bridge for taking money that could have been used to shore up dangerous bridges like the one that collapsed in Minnesota.

"I think that's when the campaign for national office began," said Ketchikan Mayor Bob Weinstein on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Weinstein noted, the state is continuing to build a road on Gravina Island to an empty beach where the bridge would have gone -- because federal money for the access road, unlike the bridge money, would have otherwise been returned to the federal government. - More...

Gov. Sarah Palin has been answering questions about a potential run for vice president for more than a year.

In July, interviewed on a cable news show, she joked that someone would first have to tell her what it is exactly a vice president does. In June, she said that if she had to decide that day, she wouldn't run.

But she usually left the door open, saying she was generally interested.

Fish Factor: Alaska's salmon catch will come in on target By LAINE WELCH - It's been a nail biter all summer, but latest counts indicate that Alaska's salmon catch will indeed come in on target. By August 29 the statewide harvest topped 134 million fish, just shy of the preseason projection of 137 million salmon. And there is a still lot of fishing left to go.

Coho catches (2.5 million so far) will continue into October and should reach the 4.4 million forecasted by state managers; chum harvests at 16 million are approaching the 18.7 million projection. The biggest slump for the season will come from a shortfall in the big money fish: sockeye salmon, which were expected to yield a harvest of 47 million fish.

"Bristol Bay came in a little short at 27 million reds, but the rest of the sockeye fisheries in the state were projected for a total harvest of 16 million, and the combined catch for those other regions is closer to 10 million," said market analyst Chris McDowell of the Juneau-based McDowell group.

Alaska salmon goes to market in many different forms and it takes many months for sales to play out across the globe. Prices to fishermen are higher in most regions, but the dockside value for the season isn't likely to top last year's catch.

"In 2007 the value ended up at $416 million, and it was the first time in 12 years that we cracked the $400 million mark - but that was the 3rd largest harvest on record at 212 million salmon," McDowell said.

Market trends that could boost the value of the 2008 catch include the hot market for salmon roe.

"There is a lot more demand from Russia and Eastern Europe, and that has drained off some of the volume that goes to the traditional market of Japan. I wouldn't quite call it a bidding war, but they are certainly competing against one another," McDowell said.

Alaska salmon also could benefit from misfortunes with its biggest competitor ­ farmed fish from Chile. Since last July more than 100 fish farms have tested positive for infectious salmon anemia (ISA), and at least 25 million pounds of fish have been discarded.

"As a result, that has kept the Chilean growers from expanding their production as much as they had expected, and it has helped to keep the salmon market somewhat stronger than it might have been," said fisheries economist Gunnar Knapp at the University of Alaska/Anchorage. "It hasn't caused the salmon supply to decline, but press reports from Japan say that Chilean coho is in short enough supply that it has led to a strengthening in salmon prices over there." - More...

DAVE KIFFER: Down the Political Rabbit Hole - YYes, Boys and Girls, that giant wooshing sound you heard Friday morning was
indeed the sound of 650,000 Alaskans simultaneously spitting out their morning coffee.

Suffice it to say, no one, other than Alaska Governor Sarah Palin's immediate family had a clue that she would be nominated to be Sen. John McCain's running mate.

Oh yeah, there were all those favorable articles in the New York Times and those photos in People and Vogue, but really, it wasn't all that serious, right? Turns out it was.

We weren't the only ones that were surprised. The "chattering classes" of the national media immediately began weighing in with "yeas" or "nays" and a heck of a lot of "huhs???"

There was a quickie internet poll on Aol.Com that found a slim majority of respondents favored the decision. But the same poll found that nearly 90 percent of the respondents knew either "little" or :"nothing" about Palin.

Talk about a blank slate.

Of course we in Alaska know quite a bit about our governor. Some of it good, some of it bad.

That's the way it is in a small state like ours, everyone seems to know everyone else. We are used to being on a first name basis with our leaders. - More...

Energy assistance by Bill Meck - I have read many of the complaints of discrimination regarding the executive order signed by Governor Sarah Palin for the "Energy assistance package" recently and find there were many flaws regarding the process of which residents of the state of Alaska were qualified. Including those who have been residing in the state continually since as long as March of 2007 or those who had paperwork that may have been filed for the annual Permanent fund dividend checks improperly. Ketchikan gas prices By Karen Ramsey - Ketchikan-area gas stations have been charging $4.45 a gallon for unleaded gas since about the third week of July. Today, August 25, the news media reported that the average price in the U.S. is $3.69 a gallon. I wonder how long it will take for stations here to start reflecting that downward trend of the price of oil and gas. Will we drivers in Ketchikan have to suffer the fate of paying at least 70 cents more per gallon than the national average for a lot longer? I hope not. Even in Honolulu where drivers usually pay even more exorbitant prices for gas than we do, the most expensive gas station today is charging $4.34. Kanayama Exchange By Haley Widness - I am saddened by the argument over who should participate in the Ketchikan-Kanayama Extchange Program. I am an alumni of the program and felt that it was one of the best experiences I have ever had the privilage to be a part of. It is not a matter of who is popular or smart, but more of a matter of commitment. At times I didn't want to fundraise or go to class, but I kept a good attitude about it and went eventhough I might not have felt up to it. At the very begining I signed a contract to that commitment. In the end it was very worth it and I had the time of my life while meeting so many new people and learning new things.
