Brothers Big Sisters Match of the Month: RK Rice and Tanner
By Susan M. Jaqua - When I spoke to RK Rice about his match with
his Little Brother, Tanner, he described a recent outing at Ward
Lake. "It was an idyllic day; there were eagles flying
and squirrels and all sorts of things to watch and both of us
were just grateful for the time." When I asked Tanner about
the day, he had a different perspective. "RK was running
all over the place turning over stumps and looking under mushrooms
for bugs and grubs. He found some; they were so disgusting,
but then he showed me how to feed the fish with them. That was
sort of interesting, but those bugs were just icky." -

One and One Equals a Great Two-Some By SUSAN M. JAQUA - Bailey is an eleven year
old boy with an impish smile and a huge heart. When he was first
matched with his Big Brother, Ketchikan minister, George Pasley,
he was struggling in school. George and Bailey began their match,
meeting in the classroom for an hour a week, but in the almost
two years they've been together, George and Bailey's friendship
has grown and flourished. The pair now meets regularly out in
the community, where they enjoy walks and hikes and activities
with George's church. - More...

Big Sister Jackie Yates and her Little Sister Devon By SUSAN
M. JAQUA - This pair is active, dynamic, creative and close.
Clever Big Sister Jackie planned a wonderful first outing which
both recalled easily, almost a year later, since being matched
July 30th, 2008. "The first day we met, we hung out pretending
to be tourists and asked the kind of questions tourists would
ask. We went to the Lumber Jack show and just got to know each
other," recounted LS Devon. Jackie remembered that day,
"We took cameras and took a bunch of pictures; it was a
blast. Our whole goal was to take as many pictures as we could
of each other." - More...

- Give magic and get magic!

is demonstrated so clearly between matches in Big Brothers Big

"Little" comes back to the "Big" - oftentimes,
at least twofold! - More...

of the Month: April 2007 by NANCY COGGINS - The storytellers
were warming up!
Recently, this author had a
chance to sit in on one of Big Brother Miguel and Little Brother
William's meetings at school. As Miguel finished telling William
about one of his childhood adventures (or misadventures), William
picked up the story-telling thread with one of his own wild stories.
Their camaraderie is what the Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS)
program is all about. They have so much fun just sharing their
experiences, containing many of life's lessons. - More...

just one of those days that ended up being a great time!"
One of their favorite days
together started at Ketchikan's Blueberry Arts Festival when

Kayla thoroughly enjoyed the pie-eating contest, getting all
messy with her friends. Then they walked all over town and ended
up going to the movies. - More..

of the Month: February 2007 By NANCY COGGINS - Big Brothers
Big Sisters meetings between "Bigs" and "Littles"
require only a little pre-planning and material. After that,
all it takes is doing what comes naturally. For "Big Brother"
David and his "Little Brother" Isaiah, one of their
best activities turned out to be pitching rocks over the water
at Settlers' Cove. Yes, that day, Isaiah learned how to throw.
Friday AM - March 09, 2007

of the Month: November 2006 by NANCY COGGINS - Often we hear
about a "Big" experiencing the magic of youth through
being matched with a "Little" - a chance to do kid
stuff again, a reminder of the time when he or she was younger.
Sure enough, even though Lindsay is a senior in high school (which
isn't that far away from when she was a kid), her match provides
that chance to "play" again. You may be thinking that
the "Big" may get as much out of such a relationship
as the "Little." And you are absolutely correct. -
Saturday - December 09, 2006

of the Month - June 2006 Story by Nancy Coggins, Photo by
Pat Nowell - You'll experience an incredibly good feeling when
you are matched with a "Little." And, you actually
become a "Big Brother" or "Big Sister" within
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southeast Alaska - Ketchikan (BBBS
SEAK - Ketchikan). All of a sudden, you feel so worthwhile. As
a Big with your Little, you might start out by sharing simple,
fun activities such as beachcombing for treasures: beach glass,
"used" shells, rocks, and dried seaweed; looking at
teaming-with-life tidal pools; planting flower seeds; picnicking
and toasting marshmallows; picking berries; sitting on a rock
or park bench and just "hanging out." You might meet
to hike a trail, take a boat ride, or fly a kite. - More...

- "Little Brother" Gabe feels special when his "Big

Though matched for only a short time, after they had been acquainted
for a couple of months, these two were off and running as though
they had been "best friends forever." Brian greets
Gabe, "Hey dude, what's up!" as he either shares a
high-five with him or rubs his hair. Gabe glows. - More...

of the Month - January 2006 By Mike Harpold - When I first
met my "Little Brother" Tyler, he had a new step-dad.
Tyler was always feeling a bit uneasy about his step-dad coming
back from his long and frequent trips. Early in our friendship,
I learned that Tyler's stepfather built plastic models for a
hobby, but Tyler was afraid to ask to build one; he felt he was
too clumsy. - More...
