Ketchikan, Alaska - Meet "Big Sister" Gail Matz and "Little Sister" Alex. They've been matched by Big Brothers Big Sisters for over nine months and do everything from attending exhibits and audio-visuals at Ketchikan's Southeast Alaska Discovery Center; to playing air hockey; to building a fire in the shelter at Ward Lake for roasting marshmallows and making hot chocolate; to walking on trails.

Alex says her favorite activity is writing. She and Gail are currently collaborating on a story about a boy who disrupts the class at school, and Alex plans to add her perception of what can be done to solve this challenge. She has already drawn pictures of all the characters.

Gail and Alex enjoyed the movie, "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory." And, for next year, they also are thinking about and planning for a fishing trip with Alex's grandfather and doing some overnight camping.

Alex's mother says that it's great for Alex to have someone special, and she always looks forward to her meetings with Gail who is very positive. "We are very glad Gail is a part of our life and pleased with the match."

Alex said, "I like Gail a lot because she is nice and fun to be with." When Gail calls, it makes me so happy, thinking about the many interesting things we can do together.

Gail says, "My match with Alex gives me a focus on what's real." It also helps me plan fun stuff out of the house.

Sound like Fun? Join the Big Brothers Big Sisters program. "Bigs" in the Ketchikan Program meet with their "Littles" two to four times a month and they do whatever interests both of them. Call 907-247-3350.
