Fish Factor: Brokers are optimistic about the outlook for Alaska salmon By LAINE WELCH - A year ago the depressed economy made it slow going for brokers who buy, sell and trade fishing permits. But that’s no longer the case. Higher salmon prices have driven up both demand and prices for salmon permits in most regions of the state.

“This year has been much busier for us,” said Doug Bowen at Alaska Boats and Permits in Homer.  “We’ve seen most of the benchmark permits up as high as they’ve been in the past 10-12 years, basically since the industry crashed when the farmed salmon came along.”

“With a few exceptions in some areas people are pretty worked up about salmon these days, and the permit market has been responding accordingly,” agreed Jeff Osborn  at Dock Street Brokers in Seattle.

Bristol Bay drift permits, for example, are selling for up to $132,000, compared to $74,000 a year ago. Another hot item is Prince William Sound seine permits.

 Seine permits “went insane” Bowen said, and practically doubled in value over night to $150,000-$160,000. Dock Street has PWS seine permits listed as high as $195,000. - More...

Alaska: U.S. ATTORNEY APPOINTS DISTRICT ELECTIONS OFFICER - United States Attorney Karen L. Loeffler announced Thursday that Assistant United States Attorney Craig M. Warner will lead the efforts of her Office in connection with the Justice Department’s nationwide Election Day Program for the upcoming November 2, 2010, general elections. Assistant United States Attorney (AUSA) Warner has been appointed to serve as the District Election Officer for the District of Alaska, and in that capacity is responsible for overseeing the District’s handling of complaints of election fraud andvoting rights abuses in consultation with Justice Department Headquarters in Washington.

Loeffler said, “Every citizen must be able to vote without interference or discrimination and to have that vote counted without it being stolen because of fraud. The Department of Justice will act promptly and aggressively to protect the integrity of the election process.” - More...

Alaska: Child Fire Play Incidents on the Rise - Several recent fire incidents caused by child fire play have Alaska fire and law enforcement officials concerned. Alaska State Fire Marshal David Tyler reminds Alaskans that one of the leading causes for child fire fatalities is child fire play. Tyler adds "the Hooper Bay fire in 2006 was one of the most costly fires in the State of Alaska and it was caused by children playing with fire".

Curiosity is usually the reason for child fire play, but in some cases there are far more troubling issues going on in a child's life that cause this behavior. There are Juvenile Firesetter Intervention programs in Alaska that can curb this behavior before a devastating fire takes place or another life is lost. The key issue for the success of these programs is early intervention. In many cases child fire play can be stopped by fire safety education instead of putting children through the judicial system. It is important for Alaskans to report incidents of child fire play to local authorities no matter how large or small they may be. If incidents are happening at school it is critical that school officials are notifying local authorities of these incidents. - More...

DAVE KIFFER: Driving in Ketchikan can be a real 'drag - I was driving by Kayhi the other day and I noticed a shiny, apparently new, Corvette in the student parking area.

Naturally my first response was what kind of CENSORED BLANKETY CENSORED parent would give their teenaged-brained offspring something like that. That was my grumpy, grownup brain.

My teenaged brain said “cool.”

I can still remember my teenage years, well at least some of them.

And a Corvette would not have been out of place in the Kayhi parking lot back then.

In those days, I had the unusual vehicle and not by choice. I had inherited a red pickup truck with a camper on the back. It may not have been cool, but it was useful. More on that later.

Meanwhile I pined after the cooler cars of my friends; the Firebirds, the Camaros, the Mustangs. Even the “family” cars that my friends drove were cool. Rivieras, T-Birds, funky old Mercedes.  Almost no pickups in those days.

A red pickup truck back then was the vehicular equivalent of an Atari in an X-box world. But I digress.

And what did we do with all those “hot” cars in our tiny little, “End of the Road sign bracketed” world? Well, we drove. We drove and drove. Some weekends, we drove and drove and drove. Back and forth. And forth and back. And back and forth. Again.

One time, I remember driving my truck back and forth between Herring Cove and Settlers Cove continuously for several hours. The idea was to see if we (I natch had two friends along with me) could put 250 miles on the truck in one stretch. It took us almost seven hours, when you factored in food stops and several bathroom breaks.

Silly, yes. Aimless, probably. But when you live on an isolated island you truly have to “make your own fun.”

We (well, actually not me in “the truck”) also raced a bit with our fine automotive steeds.

His attacks on Lisa Murkowski misrepresented her stand on issues and then he had the audacity to lie about her financial disclosure claiming that she has investments that actually do not exist. Yet, he has not bothered to file his own disclosure statement which was due 6 months ago. what is Joe hiding? He presents himself as a fiscal conservative yet he used the very system that he rails against when he collected farm subsidies for several years. WHO’S REALLY LYING? Hanger - He’s a nice enough looking fellow, this Joe Miller, and speaks with a rigid enthusiasm about the power he wants you to give him, but what he spews is a vicious ugliness that is completely divergent with the reality in this country today. This is not a recession, folks, this is a depression, and while you don’t see it in Ketchikan, or generally that much in Alaska, this is the hardest, most desperate economic time I have seen. There are old people in their 70s on street corners singing for their supper.
