The annual award is designed to honor women for their contributions to improving the lives of women and children in the community.

A gala dinner to honor the women starts with a reception at 6 p.m. Oct. 2 at the Ted Ferry Civic Center, followed by dinner and the awards ceremony.

Suggested names for the award were submitted by friends, family or community members, and and the final five honorees were selected by a WISH committee of board members and community volunteers. Briefly, the honorees this year are: - More...

Alaska: State releases study of fatal airplane crashes in Alaska; Renewed caution and diligence encouraged - A study published Wednesday by the Alaska Department of Health and Social Services Section of Epidemiology shows that while the number of aviation crashes and fatalities has declined over the past decade, the number of fatal crashes and fatalities between January and August 2010 were higher than average.

According to the study, the exact reasons for this increase are currently unclear since many investigations are ongoing. However, the study sites stable weather systems that have produced one of the coldest, gloomiest, and wettest summers on record for Southcentral Alaska as having created a potential crash hazard.

"Besides being difficult to fly in, the long stretch of poor weather may have affected pilot proficiency by limiting time in the air," said Mary O'Connor with the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, who co-authored the study. "Pilot hours may have been further reduced due to the high price of aviation fuel and other operational costs." - More...

Ketchikan & Statewide: First statewide safe medication disposal event has 45 drop-off sites; Unsafe medication storage, disposal linked to drug abuse, accidents, water contamination - Alaska's first statewide safe prescription drug drop-off event Saturday, Sept. 25, has disposal sites from Aniak to Ketchikan. The sites are among thousands to be opened nationwide in an event coordinated by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration. The free public event seeks to prevent pill abuse and theft, as well as environmental damage to our waterways.

Alaska's prescription drug abuse rates have increased seven-fold since 2005. Left-over medications in our homes contribute to child poisonings and potentially fatal recreational or accidental misuse.

Several city, borough, and state agencies, businesses, non profits and government entities teamed up to hold trial disposal events in April 2010. The events went so well the partners formed the Alaska Safe Medicine Alliance to host this statewide disposal event. - More...

Ketchikan: Coast Guard Site Closed to Public - The US Coast Guard will be closing access to the LORAN base in Shoal Cove early next week in order to dismantle three towers.

The site has been declared an active construction zone, and for the public's protection, the Forest Service and Coast Guard are advising any forest users to avoid the entire LORAN site area. - More...

Southeast Alaska: Sitka Mountain Rescue, Coast Guard respond to sinking fishing vessel in Sitka Sound - Sitka Mountain Rescue with Coast Guard assistance rescued a man from a sinking fishing vessel in Sitka Sound late Monday.

The Coast Guard and Sitka Mountain Rescue personnel heard a distress call on VHF-FM channel 16 from a man aboard the 44-foot Wrangell-based trawler Zimovia about 11:10 p.m. The 74-year-old master stated his vessel was taking on water off Kulichkof Rock.

A Sitka Mountain Rescue boat crew aboard a 19-foot fiberglass skiff and a Coast Guard Air Station Sitka MH-60 Jayhawk crew launched at 11:40 p.m. to respond. The helicopter crew located the Zimovia and guided SMR to the scene. SMR personnel arrived at 11:57 p.m. and managed to recover the man moments before the Zimovia sank.

"This was a tough situation with the vessel unstable on the rocks being tossed about and we had to put our boat into the surf to get the master aboard our boat," said Don Kluting, director Sitka Mountain Rescue, "We really appreciate our relationship and communication with the Coast Guard as a whole. It made it much easier for us knowing that H-60 crew was there if we ran into any trouble." - More...

Alaska Science: Autumn waters north of Barrow heavy with whales By Ned Rozell - Attracted by some of the smallest creatures in Alaska, dozens of the state's largest gathered last week off Point Barrow.

Bowhead whales in groups of almost 100 were grouped a few tens of miles from Barrow to take advantage of one of the richest whale feeding hotspots off the coast of Alaska. Steve Okkonen was there to see them in the shallow waters above the continental shelf north of Barrow.

"The whales we saw Friday and Saturday were in eight meters of water," said Okkonen, a research associate professor with the University of Alaska Fairbanks School of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences. "That's an eight-meter (-long) animal in eight meters of water, sometimes up to a 15-meter animal in eight meters of water." - More...

Alaska: Report examines climate change effects on ecosystems - A new report now available to the public examines how rapid climate change could affect Alaska's wildlife and ecosystems.

The publication is the culmination of a two-year effort to model future shifts in species and regional ecosystems by scientists from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the UAF Scenarios Network for Alaska Planning and the Ecological Wildlife Habitat Data Analysis for the Land and Seascape. It offers policymakers and the public a practical way to approach the question of climate change effects on Alaska ecosystems. - More...

National: After death in family, survivors hit by debt collectors By CHRIS SERRES - Dead men pay no bills, but their grieving families can. Collecting on those debts has become a lucrative specialty throughout the nation in the booming collections industry -- some are even sending sympathy cards.

Todd Murray recalls the exact moment when he decided to end his brief career as a debt collections attorney.

In late summer of 2008, his boss at the collections law firm of Gurstel Chargo in Golden Valley, Minn., informed him that he would be going after a particularly hard-to-tap group -- the dead.

"I remember thinking, My God, how can anyone actually do this?" said Murray, now a consumer rights attorney. "The whole idea of calling someone still grieving from the loss of a loved one, over some credit card debt, seemed so repulsive to me. I just couldn't do it." - More...

letterVoters Should Be Closely Scrutinizing Senator Murkowski's Motives By Myla Poelstra - The recent shakeup in Alaska's political arena from the surprising results of our primary election are bringing some interesting pictures into focus and disturbing questions to mind. Senator Murkowski's obviously unexpected loss, and subsequent decision to pursue a write in campaign after promising to respect the will of the people of Alaska by showing her support for the Republican nominee, has caused many to question her judgment and integrity. - More...

letter Fire Stations By Stephanie Sherva - It's been a long time coming, but the city is finally getting a new Downtown Fire Station. Too bad it doesn't fit the locale. Downtown has spent tons of tax dollars making itself look "old" and now they want a red and gray, modern, all angled building in the center of Downtown. Didn't any one consider the surrounding area and all the time and money spent to impress the Tourist with the "old fishing and logging town" feel? Where was the Historical Commission when all this was in the planning stages? They have no problem getting the rest of Downtown into the historical mode. As long as the inside of the building meets all the requirements of the Fire Department, why can't the outside have an "old Ketchikan" look and feel? - More...

letter Open Letter to Ketchikan Police: School Zones By Amber Anderson - I wanted to express my appreciation for your presence in the Schoenbar school zone this morning (09/20/21). It was nice to see a lot of cars tapping their breaks and stopping for kids in the crosswalks. I've lived on this bend for 3 years and have been frustrated with the lack of concern for children walking to school and bus stops. My children and I have often been nearly hit by people in a rush and/or on their cell phones. This is not something I thought I had to worry about when we bought our home here. I was naive in thinking it would be a safe walk since we live in a school zone. - More...

letterSupport Joe Miller By Liz Williams - I am unable to understand why it is wrong for Joe Miller to take out of state funds but okay for Sen. Lisa Murkowski to do so.  There is nothing illegal about the funding in either case.  While some of the funding for both Murkowski and Mr. Miller came from out of state, 100% of the votes came from Alaskans.  The majority of the voters in the Republican primary picked Joe Miller to represent them in the General election.  Republicans have a closed primary so that their members, not the members of the opposition, elect the representative who they believe will most closely represent their views in Congress.  - More...
