Alaska:
SCIENCE BEHIND THE SUCCESS: NOAA TO AGAIN CONDUCT GULF OF ALASKA BOTTOM TRAWL SURVEY - Alaska fisheries are known worldwide for being healthy, sustainable, and among the best-managed fisheries on the planet. Demand for Alaskan seafood brings in billions of dollars in revenue, and provides thousands of jobs.

SCIENCE BEHIND THE SUCCESS: NOAA TO AGAIN CONDUCT GULF OF ALASKA BOTTOM TRAWL SURVEY

The "U.S. Research" label affixed to this charter vessel indicates it is involved in the Alaska Fisheries Science Center's biennial Gulf of Alaska bottom trawl survey.

One reason for that success is the science that goes into groundfish and invertebrate stock assessments here in Alaska. To gather data for that stock assessment in the Gulf of Alaska, NOAA researchers from the Alaska Fisheries Science Center conduct a bottom trawl groundfish survey of the continental shelf and upper continental slope of the Gulf of Alaska every other year.

It's time for that survey once again, and NOAA scientists have chartered the fishing vessels Ocean Explorer and Sea Storm for the 12th biennial survey. Each of the vessels is identified with clearly visible 'NOAA Research' or 'US Research' signs posted on either side of the vessel's superstructure, indicating that it is permitted specifically for scientific surveys.

"We like to make sure the public is aware of this survey," said Guy Fleischer, deputy director of AFSC's Resource Assessment and Conservation Division. "Given that these chartered trawlers sometimes show up only occasionally along the coast, many communities are caught unawares and may be concerned until they realize it's just us NOAA fisheries biologists doing our regular survey."

The vessels will embark from Dutch Harbor, Alaska, on May 18, and begin sampling operations near the Islands of Four Mountains – about 180 miles southwest of Dutch Harbor. Sampling will continue as the vessels move eastward along the continental shelf and slope to the U.S.-Canada border near Dixon Entrance.

The cruise will last about 90 days and will be split into four legs with breaks at Sand Point, Kodiak, and Seward to exchange crews, re-provision, and take on fuel. Both vessels will complete their charters and offload in Ketchikan between August 10 and 15. - More...

Ketchikan: First City Homeless Services Receives $3,000 Grant for Day Shelter - First City Homeless Services received a $3,000 Community Development Grant from First Bank. The grant will go to fund their Day Shelter, which offers a warm, safe and dry place for Ketchikan’s homeless, marginally housed and transient community.

First City Homeless Services is a local non-profit organization that has been serving Ketchikan since December 7, 2009. “We are very grateful for this grant. The summer months are busy with the influx of new people arriving in Ketchikan. Many will not have immediate access to housing or employment”, stated John Baratki, Day Shelter Manager.

The Day Shelter assists clients in finding employment, temporary or permanent housing and getting them in touch with pertinent community resources. In addition, clients can shower, do laundry, and or play games with their families in a warm, safe place. - More...

Alaska: Missing clam diggers found deceased - Coast Guard rescue crews responded Tuesday to a distress call from the Pacific Alaska Shellfish plant manager reporting a company-owned 20-foot aluminum skiff with five employees aboard went missing while transiting the area near Polly Creek where the men had been digging for clams.

An initial search conducted Tuesday by Pacific Alaska Shellfish employees resulted in the discovery of one deceased male, wearing a lifejacket, with no sign of the other four employees.

An Air Station Kodiak-based MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew found two of the missing men at 6:05 p.m. Tuesday, 20 minutes after arriving on scene, and marked the position with flares to help a surface vessel locate and recover the remains. Both men were wearing lifejackets.

Wednesday morning, a Jayhawk helicopter crew located the remaining two men near the beach at Polly Creek within a mile of where the men were found Tuesday. The men were recovered by the helicopter crew and are being flown to Kenai for further transportation to Anchorage. Both men were not wearing lifejackets. - More...

The Alaska Airlines plane arrived early Tuesday morning with Copper River king and sockeye salmon from three seafood processors: Ocean Beauty Seafoods, Trident Seafoods and Copper River Seafoods. At least five more Alaska Airlines flights Tuesday transported salmon from Cordova, Alaska, to Anchorage, Alaska, Seattle and across the United States.

Following the arrival of the first fish, top Seattle chefs competed for the best salmon recipe in Alaska Air Cargo’s “Copper Chef Cook-off.” Executive chef and last year’s Copper Chef winner Pat Donahue, of Anthony’s Restaurants, competed against executive chefs from Elliott’s Oyster House and SkyCity at the Space Needle. Donahue was also this year's winner.

The chefs had 30 minutes to prepare and serve the first catch of the season to a panel of judges, including Jay Buhner, Seattle Mariners Hall of Famer; Mike Fourtner, deckhand on the F/V Time Bandit, as featured on Discovery Channel’s “Deadliest Catch;” and Joe Sprague, Alaska Airlines’ vice president of marketing. - More...

letter Hold on to your hats for Southeast Alaska’s largest and wackiest family fun event… By Kevin Gadsey - Southeast Alaska Independent Living (SAIL) is pleased to announce the Seventh Annual Only Fools Run at Midnight in Ketchikan. This year the event will take place on June 26th at 11:59 p.m. in all three communities (Ketchikan, Sitka & Juneau) simultaneously.  Last year, more than 150 enthusiastic participants and 50 community volunteers gathered at midnight at the Southeast Alaska Discovery Center, most clad in wild costumes, to raise money to empower people with disabilities in Southeast Alaska.  We are expecting an even better turn out this year! - More...

letter Health and wellness needs survey By Karen Eakes - The Ketchikan Wellness Coalition’s (KWC) mission is to promote community wellness through action and assessment. We are currently seeking participation and information from community members concerning health and wellness issues in our community. The KWC was originally formed following the Compass II Community Assessment that was done by United Way of Southeast Alaska back in 2006. Our seven task forces and the steering committee were formed based on the major themes and needs that were identified in this assessment. - More...

letter Cherry picking By Jeff Sbonek - In regards to the “Southeast Alaska Native Land Entitlement Finalization and Job Protection Act", the fact remains that no legislation is or ever has been necessary for Sealaska to finalize its ANCSA land claims settlements. It’s had a designated land pool to make its settlement selections from for over 40 years.  They were principle participants in the establishment of the boundaries of those land pools.  For over 3 years they have had a final selection on file with the BLM,  but have requested BLM to hold off processing that claim while they try to negotiate a “sweeter deal” through attempted legislation the past several years, an attempt to cherry pick the best of the best. - More...

letterEducation funding By Agnes Moran - I find it fascinating the controversy I've generated by simply asking the school district for detailed budget information in a consistent and comprehensive format. FY2011 funding for the Ketchikan Gateway Borough School District totaled $40,472,050 for 2,100 students. Everyone in this community has a right to question how their education dollars are being utilized and the school district has a legal responsibility to provide the information in a timely manner. - More...

letter The rest of the story By Alan Bailey - I read with dismay a paraphrased sentence in the Ketchikan Daily News concerning my opposition to a line item 6045 in the Ketchikan Gateway budget which allocated $5750.00 for junk food, prepared food, soft drinks, hors d'erves, party goods, condiments, and a Christmas party for Borough employees with tax payer monies. It was reported by Mr. Miller that I was opposed to $2,000 food served to firefighters at meetings. That was not the whole story. - More...

letter Re: Inequities in the current system of funding our K-12 schools By Ed Brown - Love that these young people of Ketchikan are paying attention to the politics in our state. Giving away other people's money is a nation and world wide sport. On the backs of the blue collar folks these gold collared folks spend your tax money for you. This is only one of many reasons to throw these bums out of office from time to time. After awhile these smart folks think they are entitled to spend all your tax money on others needs. - More...

letter Concerned By Marcie Pungowiyi - I am writing because I am concerned that a Ketchikan trailer park may be possibly operating under questionable/ shady business practices. Earlier this year I was interested in purchasing a mobile home. I talked with several mobile home owners, who were selling. Both owners warned me that I would not get approved for parking space, that no one gets approved. I was concerned by the comments, but I like to give people the benefit of the doubt. With a good record, credit, & long term employment, I did not feel I had anything to worry about. I went to this local office 3-4 times during their office hours and there was no one there each time. When I did finally catch up to the manager, I filled out a credit check application & turned it in to the manager. I was informed that I had to fill out a separate credit check for each adult. These run $20 bucks each, which I did, but this bothered me because all of the information was on the application I had already filled out. The application asked for applicant & co-applicant. - More...

letter Inequities in the current system of funding our K-12 schools By Gary Wilken - I am writing to express my appreciation for the outstanding effort of a group of Ketchikan High students in producing a YouTube video describing the inequities in the current system of funding our K-12 schools.  Led by Mr. Sean Powell, teacher, these students ably tackled a complicated provision of our Foundation Formula.  This provision penalizes Alaskans living in "Organized Alaska" (i.e. boroughs) by requiring a local contribution to their schools while those in "Unorganized Alaska" are required to pay none, regardless of ability to pay.  In the video, which I encourage all taxpayers across the state to watch the students scratch their collective heads and ask "Why?" - More...

letter Where is the death certificate, Mr. President? By By Jimmie L. Foster - Osama bin Laden is dead. Of that, I have no doubt. To question this statement one would have to question the skill and bravery of the Navy SEALS and believe that the master terrorist who occasionally appeared in propaganda videos and audio recordings was capable of perpetually eluding all human and technological intelligence. - More...

letter The Great Alaska Cluster of 2011 By Tara Jollie - A budget showdown in the last days of this special session defines what Alaskans mean when we use the term cluster. Having one or two people in the Administration making critical decisions that impact us all is not a good thing. This is a fight worth fighting. - More..

letter KCCB Spring Concert By Judith Green - Once again, for just $10 and students free, the audience was treated to live performance that was outstanding. I chose to live in Ketchikan. I was raised in a community of great renown for world wide recognition of an orchestra - graduated from a college close to NYC and performed with the chorus in Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center - having access to any number of world known conductors with orchestras and bands and chorus. Yet ... I am absolutely thrilled each time I attend a live performance here in Ketchikan, this small island community that has a wealth of people who give their time and talent to learn and then to share - choral, band, dance, theater, painting, sculpting, writing and the list goes on. - More...

letter Request for help with research on Unangan at Ward Lake in WWII By Rachel Mason - I am writing to request information and suggestions from knowledgeable Ketchikan residents. Lost Villages of the Aleutians is a National Park Service project documenting the history of four villages that disappeared during World War II. In 1942, the residents of three tiny Aleutian villages, Makushin, Kashega, and Biorka, were among those who were brought by boat to stay near Ketchikan at the Ward Lake CCC camp. Some of them died and were buried in the Ketchikan cemetery. After the war, their numbers further diminished by illness and attrition, the residents of those villages were not permitted to return to their homes. Instead, they were resettled in other Unangan (Aleut) communities. - More...

letter Sealaska to take over Redoubt Falls? By Florian Sever - Sealaska Corporation is due to receive yet another allotment of land, separate and apart from the land that Sealaska is trying to get through the Sealaska Lands Bill. Sealaska has asked the BLM for 11 acres of land surrounding the falls where Lake Redoubt drains into Redoubt Bay, near Sitka.  The falls are a popular site for subsistence fishing for sockeye salmon.  Many people in Sitka rely on this fishery for a part of their livelihood.  I question what Sealaska shareholders have to gain from the proposed conveyance of 11 acres of Forest Service land at Redoubt Falls into private Sealaska Corporation hands. - More...
