Ketchikan: Largest Montreal Canoe Ever Built Visits Ketchikan - The Spirit Dancer, a 42-foot Canot du Maitre (Montreal Canoe), arrived in Ketchikan late Monday morning with a crew of eleven Canadian paddlers. According to the coordinators of the trip Kris Cooper and Bob Saunders, the all-wood Spirit Dancer is the largest Montreal canoe ever built.

The Spirit Dancer's eleven member crew began their 3 1/2 month paddling adventure in Vancouver. The group is headed north to Glacier Bay with many planned sightseeing stops enroute - including Ketchikan. Ports of call prior to reaching Ketchikan included Prince Rupert, B.C. and Metlakatla. The group of eleven left Prince Rupert on May 11th with a one night stay in Metlakatla before arriving in Ketchikan on Monday the 17th. - Read more & view photos...

Ketchikan: LeConte Floating Freely, Salvors Transport to Ketchikan - The Unified Command reported that the LeConte floated free of Cozian Reef at 11:40 Monday morning. Salvage crews from Crowley Marine worked through the weekend to patch, plug and make the necessary fittings to prepare the LeConte to be re-floated.

Metal cofferdams, plywood, epoxy and neoprene patches which were used to temporarily plug holes and damaged areas on the hull. In places where the hull could not be patched, air compressors are being used to create a bubble for the ship to float on. With this buoyancy, the ship was able to float free of the reef at high tide and was towed to deeper water where dive teams took another look at the bottom. No additional damage was reported. - Read more...

Almost two years earlier the United States had declared war against Germany and set sail to join the already-fighting British in France. American forces sailed off across the Atlantic to rousing choruses of George M. Cohen's latest Tin-Pan Alley hit, "Over there! Over there! Send the word, send the word over there that the Yanks are comin'! the Yanks are comin'."

Those Yanks were from Maine to California as well as from the remotest regions of the Territory of Alaska! Once arrived in Europe, they jolted across the French countryside in careening trucks and marched to the front lines to join in the bloody trench warfare against the German Kaiser. - Read the rest of this story by June Allen...
