Fish Factor: Most comprehensive, user friendly report on Alaska’s seafood industry released By LAINE WELCH - Want to know the average fish prices at the docks over a decade … or where most Alaska fishermen and fishing fleets call home?  Or how Alaska’s seafood industry stacks up against other state industries?

What is likely the most comprehensive, user friendly report ever done on Alaska’s seafood industry by region was just released by the Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute.  Titled “Economic Value of the Alaska Seafood Industry,” the report was compiled by the Juneau-based McDowell Group, and it includes all of the direct and indirect economic effects of the industry for Alaska, Washington and the nation.

Here are some highlights:  The seafood industry directly employed more than 63,000 people in   Alaska in 2011, meaning 1-in-8 workers earned at least part of their annual income from seafood.   The industry accounted for 9 percent of all private sector resident earnings.

Alaska residents account for 58 percent of the commercial fishing workforce in Alaska. The other 42 percent come from all over the U.S. and other countries.

The Alaska seafood industry created an estimated 34,500 jobs and nearly $2 billion in labor income for Washington residents in 2011. In fact, Alaska fisheries directly employ more Washington residents and generate more direct labor income than Washington’s fishing or logging industries.

Nationwide, the Alaska seafood industry puts 94,000 people to work. For every Alaska fisherman, processor, or direct support worker, an additional 1.24 U.S. jobs were created by the Alaska seafood industry.

Alaska accounted for 56 percent of the total U.S. commercial catches and 36 percent of total U.S. ex-vessel value (at the docks) in 2011.

Although Alaska produces 95 percent of all salmon caught in the U.S., it represents only about 23 percent of the total U.S. salmon supply. Nearly 80 percent of all U.S. seafood is imported.

Salmon is Alaska’s most valuable species, worth 31 percent of the total dockside value in 2011. Alaska pollock is by far the largest fishery by volume, and the second most valuable. Halibut and black cod combined make up the third most valuable species, followed by crab, Pacific cod and flatfish.

Alaska’s commercial fishing fleet included 32,000 fishermen on roughly 8,600 fishing boats in 2011.

About two-thirds of all Alaska seafood is exported; seafood from Alaska accounts for 58 percent of all U.S. seafood exports ($3.2 billion in 2011).

Salmon accounted for 75 percent of Southeast Alaska’s total wholesale value in 2011. The seafood industry accounted for 18 percent of all labor income earned in that region.

Kodiak’s seafood industry provided about 56 percent of total employment. Kodiak is generally regarded as having the most diverse collection of fisheries in the state. - More...

Southeast: Coast Guard encourages boating safety during Labor Day weekend in Alaska - The Coast Guard anticipates an increased number of recreational boaters throughout Alaska during Labor Day weekend and is urging boaters to take proper safety precautions while on the water.

The Coast Guard suggests four steps every boater can take to reduce the risk of accidents, prevent serious injuries and ensure a safe and enjoyable weekend:

Boaters should always wear a lifejacket. The number one cause of boating fatalities is drowning, most often by sudden, unexpected entry into the water. Wearing a lifejacket increases the chances of surviving a boating accident. The law states you must have a life jacket, or personal floatation device, for every person aboard. The Coast Guard recommends boaters wear lifejackets at all times. In Alaska children 13 years of age and younger are required to wear a lifejacket when on the water and no tin an enclosed cabin.

Never boat under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Alcohol and drugs affect judgment, vision, balance and coordination. Alcohol, combined with boat motion, vibration, engine noise, sun, wind and spray accelerate an operator's impairment. Intoxicated boaters can face both federal and state charges with penalties of up to one year in prison and fines up to $10,000. The legal definition of intoxication in Alaska is a blood alcohol content of .08 or higher. - More...

Alaska: BLM-Alaska Issues Patents for over 379,000 Acres - The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) issued patents yesterday for just over 379,758 acres.

The Bureau of Land Management-Alaska surveys and conveys lands in Alaska mainly under three statutes: the Native Allotment Act of 1906; the Alaska Statehood Act, and the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act. The work being done to implement these laws is collectively called the Alaska Land Transfer Program.

When completed, over 150 million acres, approximately 42% of the land area in Alaska, will have been transferred from federal to state and private ownership.

BLM-Alaska State Director Bud Cribley said, “BLM-Alaska is committed to the efficient transfer of lands in order to complete the land transfer program in Alaska.” - More...

WILL DURST: The Least Laboring of Days - Hey, it's Labor Day, everybody. Woo-hoo. Okay, we're partying now. Throw your arms in the air and wave them like you just don't care. Blow up some balloons. Tap a keg. Rip open a bag of chips. Because this isn't a champagne and caviar kind of thing. This is the very definition of blue collar. If collars be worn at all.

It was 1894 when Labor Day first punched into work. Grover Cleveland signed it into law six days after the end of the Pullman Strike, during which federal troops killed more than 30 strikers. Cynics saw it as a kind of make-up sex between the government and the American worker. Well, flowers and candy anyhow.

The first Monday of September was specifically picked to bridge the long holiday gap between the Fourth of July and Thanksgiving, and to get as far away from May Day as possible. In the late 19th century, labor unions were one thing, but Communists were a horse of a different color.

For 120 years, Labor Day has been the red-headed stepchild of holidays. As glamorous as the guy with a shovel following a mule in a parade. Something you roll out to get Child Protective Services off your butt. "Look, we gave you an entire day, now give it a rest, would you? What do you want, cake?"

Goldilocks would have loved Labor Day. Not too hot. Not too cold. Less incendiary than Easter and Christmas, but with a decidedly higher thermal print than the International Talk Like a Pirate Day, fast approaching on September 19. Hard to believe its time to dig out the eye patch, wooden leg and Jolly Roger. Again. Already.

Because of Labor Day's peculiar calendar placement, it has morphed into not so much a celebration as a seasonal signal flag. Here lies the tired, dried-up body of summer. Time to roll up the garden hose and recharge the snow blower. Bury the swimsuits and exhume the parkas. Watermelon smoothies give way to pumpkin lattes. Weenie roasts on the back deck -- no. Tailgating in a dirt parking lot -- yes. - More...

letter Labor Day Message By Gov. Sean Parnell - While many have the day off, plenty of Alaskans will show up for work – cashiers, technicians, medical professionals and pipeline workers. Our public safety network – troopers, police officers, firefighters and EMTs, members of the Guard and other military service members – are all on the job, keeping Alaskans safe. - More...

letter A view worth capturing By Marshall H. Massengale - Every once in a while, the KPU Webcam manages to catch a view worth capturing as a feature photograph for publication on the SITNews Website.  Here is attached one that I captured this morning at 7:42 AM Local Time this morning 9/2/2013 from KPU Cam 1.  The sunburst from behind Deer Mountain illuminates all the back space behind the cruise ship docked at Pier 1, providing something of a surreal dreamscape. - More...

letter Re: Let's prioritize wild Alaska salmon By Mike Svenson - After reading Heather Hardcastle's letter on the Tongass, I have a question for her. letter RE: Parrots By Duane Hill - Thank you, but let's not allow the discussion to be diverted to one of race or ethnicity, and who did what to whom. That is a "no win" discussion. If he wishes to push the issue in that direction, I'm certain that some lawyer would be happy to take a libel suit on spec, especially if I offer to cooperate for a split just large enough to cover my expenses and lost wages. - More...

letter Let's prioritize wild Alaska salmon By Heather Hardcastle - 2013 is turning out to be a banner year for salmon in Southeast Alaska. This year’s staggering salmon returns are a reminder the Tongass is the country’s preeminent salmon forest. As Forest Service Chief Tom Tidwell tours Southeast Alaska this week, I urge him to do all he can to ensure the nation’s largest national forest is managed with wild salmon as the highest priority. - More...

letter Egypt - Turn Off The Money By Glenn Mollette - The United States and our President must come together today and stop all money flowing from our hard earned tax dollars to Egypt. Yes, I am talking about your money and your children's money and your grandparent's hard earned tax dollars flowing into Egypt at the rate of 1.5 billion dollars each year. Since 1948, we have given over 71 billion dollars to Egypt.  That is more money than we have given to any nation, except Israel. - More...

letter Elimination of statewide Alaska Hire By Andree McLeod - A sweeping change happened when Gov. Sean Parnell, through his Deputy Commissioner of Labor and Workforce Development, ended statewide Alaska Hire requirements for public works contracts. With one stroke of the pen, a statewide Alaska Hire policy that's been in place for the last 25 years to serve the interests of Alaskans and their families was made null and void by the elimination of Alaska Hire preferences in Anchorage, Fairbanks, Juneau, and other communities. - More...

letter Tour Companies By Marlene Steiner - I don't know how many years that Herring Cove has been dealing with Tour Companies and cabs taking people down Powerhouse Road during the summer months and letting these people they haul go on private properties or walk on the highway to and from the bridge. letter KPU Late Charges By Gladys Natkong - I also wrote a letter about the "late charges". My Ketchikan Public Utilities electric bill fell late in Dec. after my daughter forgot to tell me that the KPU worker came and told me to have my payment in by noon. It was 12:26 and I was still getting ready to go. My late charge was $350.00 and was told that if my payments were paid on time it would be applied. I am also on a fixed income. All totaled I paid close to $1000.00 to have my lights turned back on. They knew I have a grandchild living with me and it was Christmas. We went without lights for 3 weeks. - More...

letter Trayvon Martin's death By Duane Hill - Criticism aimed at George Zimmerman is based on GZ not profiling or stereotyping Trayvon Martin as being the depraved and violent criminal he proved to be. GZ "should have known better" (Why?) than expect TM to act as a responsible and civilized human. As a result, GZ ended up flat on his back with TM beating the snot out of him, with a cement sidewalk behind his head so he was taking head injuries. There was no playground monitor or school teacher around to tell TM to behave, not that the 17 year old criminal would have obeyed. Then Trayvon Martin told George Zimmerman that TM was going to kill GZ. - More...

letter VOTE YES ON HOSPITAL BONDS By Bill Tatsuda - PeaceHealth Ketchikan Medical Center, Ketchikan’s largest private employer with over 400 good paying jobs, is very important to our local economy and quality of life.  The key to the hospital’s viability is its ability to perform surgeries, which bring patients to the hospital facility thus generating enough revenue to keep the hospital open.  The current operating rooms are too old, too small, and inadequate to carry the hospital far into the future.  Recruiting and retaining top surgeons in Ketchikan will become more and more difficult if not impossible unless new, larger, modern, state of the art surgical suites are added.  The viability of our hospital depends on accomplishing its planned expansion. - More...
