Ketchikan: New Electronic Health Record System at PeaceHealth Medical Group Clinics - A new method of maintaining electronic health records (EHR) will soon be in place at PeaceHealth Medical Group clinics in Ketchikan and Prince of Wales. The new system, called EPIC, will make communication easier for patients, especially those who receive health care at different facilities. It provides easy and secure retrieval of information and will track information with greater efficiency and accuracy and improve communications with patients.

“Timely information is critical to high quality patient care,” said Ken Tonjes, interim Chief Administrative Officer for PeaceHealth Ketchikan Medical Center. “This new EHR system is a more powerful tool to effectively help PeaceHealth clinicians better manage our patients’ care.”

To better serve patients by using newer health care technologies, all PeaceHealth facilities are switching to EPIC. PeaceHealth Ketchikan will transition to the new system September 1.

Among the many benefits of the new Epic EHR – a certified system that meets federal health care reform standards – is the easy, secure retrieval of information for providers in a variety of ways. Patients and physicians alike benefit from this enhancement.

Another benefit to patients is that Epic EHR is used by many health care facilities across the Pacific Northwest and nationwide, which makes it simple for patients, no matter where they receive their care, to have providers exchange important medical information on their behalf.

“Using Epic here will most certainly allow for greater continuity of care for my patients who are seen elsewhere in health systems that also use the Epic EHR – such as the University of Washington, Group Health and Swedish,” said Women’s Health physician Deb Landis Lewis MD. “It can be challenging to access complete records from other providers in a timely fashion. With Epic, I can look up information when I need to, even together with the patient in the exam room. I hope this also allows women to feel more involved in their care and part of decision-making.”

According to Tonjes, this makes it especially convenient for patients who travel and may need care outside of our community. “Doctors from other health systems that also use Epic EHR can easily look up notes from recent visits, as well as allergies, medications or other information for a patient who received care at PeaceHealth. “The Epic EHR supports better overall patient assessment and treatment decision.” - More...

Ketchikan: Ketchikan man arrested for alleged burglary - Ketchikan Police Officers responded to an intrusion alarm at the Tongass Trading Marine Company in the early morning hours last Thursday.  According to a press release, upon arrival officers noted a broken door.

Alaska: Polar Bears in the Chukchi Sea Doing Well, Despite Sea Ice Loss - Climate change is the greatest long-term threat to polar bears. On May 15, 2008, the U. S. Fish & Wildlife Service (Service) listed the bear as threatened throughout its range under the Endangered Species Act. If loss of sea ice habitat continues, most populations of this iconic species are expected to decline or disappear by the end of the 21st century. But the path to that point might not be straightforward according to Eric V. Regehr of the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. In fact says Regehr, scientists expect a lot of variation in when, where, and how the effects of sea ice loss will appear. According to a new study, by some measures one of the Arctic’s nineteen polar bear populations is doing quite well.

Polar bears have large paws which helps distribute their weight, like a snowshoe, allowing them ease of travel on snow and ice.

The Chukchi Sea population (also called the Alaska-Chukotka population) lives west of Alaska on the sea ice of the northern Bering, Chukchi, and eastern Siberian seas. Because this area is harsh, remote, and vast - more than one and a half times the size of Texas—information on the bears that live there has been limited. In 2008, the Service began new research to fill this gap. The project continues today in collaboration with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and State of Alaska, and is also supported by government, Native, and industry partners in western Alaska. - More...

DANNY TYREE: MLK's "I Have A Dream" Speech Turns 50 - Mark your calendar for August 28, the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King's iconic "I Have A Dream" speech, which was delivered to more than 250,000 civil rights supporters from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial.

I'll be thinking of Dr. King on that anniversary of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom— and I'll be thinking about my late father, Lewis Tyree.

Dad once told of a conversation (circa 1970s) with a man from our hometown. The fellow was trying to organize a neighborhood movement to keep any ("N-word") families from moving onto his street.

Puzzled, my father named a particular African-American who had been an honored guest in the man's home on many occasions.

"Oh, replied the man, "he ain't a ('N-word'). He's my buddy. I KNOW him!"

So, although much progress has been made toward a colorblind society in the past five decades, we still need a lot of "buddies" to continue the advances. - More...

TOM PURCELL: Why Obamacare Is Good for Me - I hate to say it, but ObamaCare has been good for me.

Now, I know our economy is still struggling — Gallup says the unemployment rate just jumped to nearly 9 percent — and I know ObamaCare uncertainty is making many employers wary of hiring.

But I also know that new opportunities exist for people like me who provide communications services for companies that now prefer to outsource much of their work - rather than hire full-timers.

And my business is dandy.

Few full-time employees are aware of it, but their benefits package - health, life, dental and disability insurance, "free" college tuition, workers' compensation insurance, 401(k) matching, etc. - is a costly thing to employers. - More...

letter Alaska’s strong economy impacts ‘Alaska-hire’ zones of underemployment By Dianne Blumer - While much of the Lower 48 is still recovering from a devastating recession, Alaska’s economy remains stable, and our employment numbers are strong. Alaska’s unemployment rate for 2012 was 1.1 percent below the national average. - More...

letter PARROTS By David G. Hanger - We got it, Duane Hill. You are not in any sense a civil rights activist, as is blatantly expressed by your cracker point of view. - More...

letter Egypt - Turn Off The Money By Glenn Mollette - The United States and our President must come together today and stop all money flowing from our hard earned tax dollars to Egypt. Yes, I am talking about your money and your children's money and your grandparent's hard earned tax dollars flowing into Egypt at the rate of 1.5 billion dollars each year. Since 1948, we have given over 71 billion dollars to Egypt.  That is more money than we have given to any nation, except Israel. - More...

letter Elimination of statewide Alaska Hire By Andree McLeod - A sweeping change happened when Gov. Sean Parnell, through his Deputy Commissioner of Labor and Workforce Development, ended statewide Alaska Hire requirements for public works contracts. With one stroke of the pen, a statewide Alaska Hire policy that's been in place for the last 25 years to serve the interests of Alaskans and their families was made null and void by the elimination of Alaska Hire preferences in Anchorage, Fairbanks, Juneau, and other communities. - More...

letter Tour Companies By Marlene Steiner - I don't know how many years that Herring Cove has been dealing with Tour Companies and cabs taking people down Powerhouse Road during the summer months and letting these people they haul go on private properties or walk on the highway to and from the bridge. It getting to the point where these drivers park half way on people's properties or block where someone cannot get off Powerhouse Road if they want to leave. Now they are going on property when fenced off and when clearly marked. - More...

letter KPU Late Charges By Gladys Natkong - I also wrote a letter about the "late charges". My Ketchikan Public Utilities electric bill fell late in Dec. after my daughter forgot to tell me that the KPU worker came and told me to have my payment in by noon. It was 12:26 and I was still getting ready to go. My late charge was $350.00 and was told that if my payments were paid on time it would be applied. I am also on a fixed income. All totaled I paid close to $1000.00 to have my lights turned back on. They knew I have a grandchild living with me and it was Christmas. We went without lights for 3 weeks. - More...

letter Trayvon Martin's death By Duane Hill - Criticism aimed at George Zimmerman is based on GZ not profiling or stereotyping Trayvon Martin as being the depraved and violent criminal he proved to be. GZ "should have known better" (Why?) than expect TM to act as a responsible and civilized human. As a result, GZ ended up flat on his back with TM beating the snot out of him, with a cement sidewalk behind his head so he was taking head injuries. There was no playground monitor or school teacher around to tell TM to behave, not that the 17 year old criminal would have obeyed. Then Trayvon Martin told George Zimmerman that TM was going to kill GZ. - More...

letter VOTE YES ON HOSPITAL BONDS By Bill Tatsuda - PeaceHealth Ketchikan Medical Center, Ketchikan’s largest private employer with over 400 good paying jobs, is very important to our local economy and quality of life.  The key to the hospital’s viability is its ability to perform surgeries, which bring patients to the hospital facility thus generating enough revenue to keep the hospital open.  The current operating rooms are too old, too small, and inadequate to carry the hospital far into the future.  Recruiting and retaining top surgeons in Ketchikan will become more and more difficult if not impossible unless new, larger, modern, state of the art surgical suites are added.  The viability of our hospital depends on accomplishing its planned expansion. - More...

letter Guns: Stand Your Ground By Mike Harpold - In September, Alaska will be blessed with a new law allowing me to use deadly force to stand my ground if I am in a place I have a right to be, like a public park, a street or a bar, and am threatened with serious bodily injury by a bully. Thanks Governor Parnell and state lawmakers, but I think I will pass on this. - More...

letter Tansy ragwort By Victoria McDonald - Tansy ragwort continues to grow throughout our hot dry summer. A few of us have been busy picking on the south end, mainly in the Fawn Mountain area. One woman in Bear Valley called with information that she sprayed full strength white vinegar on plants in her driveway and the first year tansy plants died out, (along with surrounding plants so be careful). I've sprayed first year plants as I pick the tall second year growth and will see if vinegar is as powerful as she reported. - More...

letter Past time for citizens of the USA to politically revolt By Glen E Terrell - It's well past time for citizens of the USA to politically revolt against our elected governing elite, or EGE. The EGE has mal served our country for decades. Congressmen have served their own personal greed and members of both parties have worked to advance their own party's strength. Meanwhile the welfare of the country has been ignored. America is no longer respected around the world, agencies of our government are abusing and spying on us citizens, the national debt and deficit have America on the brink of financial collapse and now Congress has exempted its members and their staff members from Obama care. Enough is enough! - More...
