Ketchikan: 11 Things You Might Not Know About the Proposed New Rain Gauge - The funds for Ketchikan's new $95,000 rain gauge to replace the Berth II rain gauge sign are not CPV funds (Commercial Passenger Vessel Excise Tax) as previously thought. One of 11 things you might not know about the newly proposed rain gauge. The Ketchikan Area Arts & Humanities Council (KAAHC) learned of this funding change yesterday. The designated funds to design the rain gauge will be coming from the Maritime Tax. Knowing that the Maritime Tax must be used to fund projects for Ketchikan's ports/docks, the Council will seek out more information regarding this funding.

11 Things You Might Not Know About the Proposed New Rain Gauge

The new rain gauge proposed by Jennifer Townley and Bette Adriaanse of The Netherlands to replace the rain gauge on Berth II.

The new rain gauge proposed by Jennifer Townley and Bette Adriaanse of The Netherlands is a steel structure that holds cylindrical glass shapes that collect, measure and kinetically distribute the rain. By use of automated stepper motors and a mechanical construction of ball screws and lever taps the citizens and visitors of Ketchikan can keep track of all the rain that has fallen in the past week, month and even year. The drawings that will cover the base of the sculpture and surround the electrical components will be based on the nature around Ketchikan, serving as a celebration of the rain as the origin of the local nature, the identity of the area and the source of many visitor attractions. The scenery depicted in the final drawings will be chosen after the artists visit Ketchikan and take suggestions for the community.

Ten other things citizens of Ketchikan might not know about the new rain gauge released the the Arts Council:

1. The selection process was based on an industry standard procedure for publicly selecting art. It has been tailored to fit Ketchikan and has successfully selected the Rock, the glass mosaics on the promenade, Stephen Jackson's piling caps at Thomas Basin, the public art in the new library, and the Yeltatzie Salmon, as well as the art in the High School, Fawn Mountain Elementary, and Schoenbar Middle School.

2. Notice of the Call to Artists and the process was put out to the public via newspaper, email, hand delivery, Facebook, other Alaska Arts Councils, word of mouth, local radio stations, and the Public Art Commission on June 28, 2013.

3. A Pre-Proposal meeting/teleconference was held on August 8, 2013, from 1-3pm at the Ketchikan Gateway Borough. This offered an opportunity for artists to direct questions to the project/design team and KAAHC relative to design specifications for art pieces. 9 people were in attendance with another 7 via teleconference - 4 were local artists.

4. The selection panel was made up of 15 community members representing various parts of the community: - More...

Alaska:
Study: Arctic seafloor methane releases double previous estimates By Marmian Grimes - The seafloor off the coast of Northern Siberia is releasing more than twice the amount of methane as previously estimated, according to new research results published in the Nov. 24 edition of the journal Nature Geoscience.

Members of the scientific field expedition drill through the ice and into the seafloor of the East Siberian Arctic Shelf.

The East Siberian Arctic Shelf is venting at least 17 teragrams of the methane into the atmosphere each year. A teragram is equal to 1 million tons.

“It is now on par with the methane being released from the arctic tundra, which is considered to be one of the major sources of methane in the Northern Hemisphere,” said Natalia Shakhova, one of the paper’s lead authors and a scientist at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. “Increased methane releases in this area are a possible new climate-change-driven factor that will strengthen over time.”

Methane is a greenhouse gas more than 30 times more potent than carbon dioxide. On land, methane is released when previously frozen organic material decomposes. In the seabed, methane can be stored as a pre-formed gas or asmethane hydrates. As long as the subsea permafrost remains frozen, it forms a cap, effectively trapping the methane beneath. However, as the permafrost thaws, it develops holes, which allow the methane to escape. These releases can be larger and more abrupt than those that result from decomposition.

The findings are the latest in an ongoing international research project led by Shakhova and Igor Semiletov, both researchers at the UAF International Arctic Research Center. Their twice-yearly arctic expeditions have revealed that the subsea permafrost in the area has thawed much more extensively than previously thought, in part due to warming water near the bottom of the ocean. The warming has created conditions that allow the subsea methane to escape in much greater amounts than their earlier models estimated. Frequent storms in the area hasten its release into the atmosphere, much in the same way stirring a soda releases the carbonation more quickly. - More...

jpg Dave KifferDAVE KIFFER:Talking turkey, or not - Perhaps the most interesting part of Thanksgiving is the food.

But first a disclaimer, I am certainly not a first class “foodie.”

Sure, I like to eat and I like to occasionally eat some interesting stuff (hereby defined as anything NOT in a can or a Kraft box). But I did grow up in Our Fair Salmon City and by definition that means I have a pretty limited “palate” compared to more metropolitan noshers.

Whenever my wife bemoans the fact that our son acts like she “is trying to poison him” whenever she suggests he try something new (especially something outside the general macaroni and cheese color wheel), I always have to pipe up that he “is a Ketchikan boy” as if that explains his generally undeveloped taste buds.

So, why is that?

My wife, who is much more finicky foodie than me believes it is because Ketchikan is sorely lacking in Greeks and Italians. There is something to that. After all, if you look at restaurants that are profiled on the Food Network, the vast majority seem to be owned and staffed by Greeks and Italians.

But why should geography matter?

Probably because those Mediterranean cultures have learned to spice up their food. That is important because, really, when you break it down everyone the world over eats the same thing.

We have something vegetablish, we eat a starch (sometimes starchy enough to make your spine sit straight up for a week). And we all eat some sort of meat thingy, sometimes a very mysteriously meaty (Tofurky! Lutefisk! Turducken! Head of Salmon in a Jar!).

Therefore, the key to cuisine is what you do with the basic ingredients. And folks around the Mediterranean just do better things. For example, I have never heard an Italian say anything remote similar to what my Scottish grandmother once must have said.

“There is no such thing as overcooked. If something tastes good at 20 minutes, it will taste twice as good as 40 minutes.”

Uh huh. - More...

letter The New Rain Gauge By Pamela Davies - As much as I wish I still lived in Ketchikan, I do not. I was born and raised to love the rain, and this story really sparked my interest... My first thought was, "Awesome! I love art!" My immediate thought after that was, "what a waste of money!!!" Don't get me wrong, the tourists need SOMETHING to look at, I guess. Why not our beautiful city? - More...

letter Running as a Democrat By A.M. Johnson - Been waiting patiently for a Democrat to announce his or her running for the Alaska State House. As I await I have given thought to the changing political scene where the Independent Party has attracted a logically thought of Democrat contender while the Democrat Party standing silent with no contender. That requires action. Given an open forum as well as an open candidacy I am giving thought to registering and running as a Democrat. You may ask why. As an example I am so taken with the Democrats Alternative Health Care progress as an example demonstrate the wonders of Big Government, I'd be jumping right in advocating the State of Alaska participate to the tune of Billions of our fiscal holdings. - More...

letter Save the Republic By Glen E Terrell - This is OUR COUNTRY!  We don’t have to accept the trash coming out of Washington DC that’s being presented to us as “the fruit of the government of the greatest nation on Earth.”  The president’s approval rating is 37% and that of Congress is about 9%.  Collectively those we have elected to govern us are unfit to do so.  It’s time for “change that really matters.” - More...

letter Obamacare By Duane Hill - Mr Noggles certainly likes the understatement. As of 18 Nov, the number of people who had their insurance CANCELLED was over 5 million. letter Support for Citizen's comment - KIC By James Llanos Sr - On 11-18-2013, several people rose and talked to the Ketchikan Indian Community (KIC) Council to make comments.  Some commented on a need to provide better or more services, some about programs.  Once speaker, David Jensen, rose and talked to the KIC Council about their responsibility and duties as Council people of the Tribe.  He spoke about having a need for everyone to work together and that if they as individual Council persons exceed their authority, rules, regulations and Tribal laws then they are submitting themselves as being liable and subject to lawsuit as individuals.  He is right, I have seen this in other Tribes across the nation.  The Tribes lawyers are then unable to defend them as individuals since they go beyond their authority.  - More...

letter Random Acts of Kindness By Julia Zink-Kubley - I am along time resident of Ketchikan, born and raised here. It was on a cold and raining day this week while sewing in my Sew Suite and recovering from a (mild) case of the shingles that a young lady knocked at my door. She explained that it was her birthday and that to celebrate she was doing random acts of kindness. She handed me a large gift bag with necessary items in it. letter Rights of Persons with Disabilities By Debbie Nance - We’ve just celebrated Veterans Day where we honored men and women who fought to preserve freedom and the sovereignty of the United States.  I am so thankful for what they do and have done.

It has come to my attention that our US Senators are considering passage of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) and that both of our Alaska US Senators support the ratifying of this dangerous treaty.  This treaty essentially threatens the sovereignty of the United States, one of the things that our Veterans fought hard for.  This treaty would give the United Nations authority over US citizens.  It would give the UN the right to make laws that would supersede US laws. - More...

letter Alexander Archipelago Wolves By Rebecca Noblin - Thank you very much for your good story about our Alexander Archipelago wolf letter. I have one point of correction. You correctly note that we assert the wolf “is a unique Alaska subspecies of gray wolf.” But in the next paragraph you say, “Not everyone agrees that the Alexander Archipelago wolves are a unique species.” We are not arguing that they are a unique species, but a unique subspecies of the gray wolf. And as you go on to point out, the state of Alaska agrees that the Alexander Archipelago wolf is a subspecies of the gray wolf. There is agreement all around on this point. - More...
