The Skatepark is Happening!

The Shane Howard White Memorial Skatepark is nearing completion. After years in the making, Ketchikan is about to become the proud owners of a 21st Century skatepark that meets the criteria of all skaters—skateboarders, inline skaters and scooters.  Best of all, a 24/7 streaming web camera system will make use of the park totally transparent, available at any time—promoting  safe and appropriate usage—accessible for your viewing pleasure by going to www.kyiyouth.org from the convenience of your computer or smart phone. Very nice huh!

Unlike boring, cookie cutter parks, Liquid Stone Designs LLC, out of Oregon, the design-build contractor, has created a facility that is not only able to fill the needs of every type of user but also showcases as a piece of art  to the envy of many.

This park NEVER could have been completed without generous donations from Shirley and Al White, the Ketchikan Gateway Borough Staff and Assembly, the City of Ketchikan and KPU Staff and City Council. We are so grateful for all of the volunteer help, labor from skaters jumping in, materials and services from all of the contractors and businesses who have bent over backwards to make this dream come true.

A very special thank you goes out to the U.S. Coast Guard for donating surplus materials that are being utilized in one-of-a kind fixtures, giving the park a marine theme. For all of this, Ketchikan Youth Initiatives (KYI) is deeply touched and appreciative of everyone's generosity.

I would like to add that safety has been and always will be the first and foremost concern of KYI.  There are rules that will need to be followed when using this park, such as helmets required, possession of alcohol and other drugs prohibited.  (KYI and other donors are developing an inventory of helmets and other safety gear to help out those who may have trouble complying this this requirement.)  Signage will be clearly posted that outlines these conditions so that there will be no confusion.

So Ketchikan, thanks again. Get ready for years and years of great times down at the skatepark.  Be on the lookout for announcement of our grand opening festivities at the end of November
