West Coast/Alaska: Catastrophic tsunami possible on West Coast - The type of devastating tsunami that struck the southern coast of Asia is entirely possible in the Pacific Northwest of the United States, but might not cause as much loss of life there because of better warning systems, according to experts at Oregon State University.

Ketchikan: 2004 Southeast Alaska Experienced Warmest Summer Ever - The National Weather Service in Juneau, reports that Southeast Alaska had the warmest summer ever experienced in this region. This can be attributed to a large persistent upper level high pressure area that was positioned over most of the panhandle and the Yukon Territory which deflected most of the low pressure storms more south or north of the area. - More...

Ketchikan: Blue Heron Causes Power Outage - According to Ketchikan Public Utilities (KPU) Electric Division Manager Jay Hansen, the power outage that occurred at approximately 6:30 am Sunday was caused by a Blue Heron, that unfortunately for the bird and KPU customers, flew into the system switch gear at the Ketchikan substation near the ball field. - More...

photosBetty King the Dog Lady; Ketchikan's one-woman humane society - There is an alley in downtown Ketchikan named Betty King Alley. It's a very narrow little mid-block lane that begins on Dock Street and cuts through to Mission and then to Mill Street. Mill is a comparatively new (1972) street named for the sprawling and now-gone Ketchikan Spruce Mill that buzzed and rumbled with activity at the site for some eighty years. A few years back, the previously anonymous alley was finally named. The name chosen was Daly Alley, chosen to honor one of the Spruce Mills pioneer families. It was a dubious honor, actually.
