Alaska: New Public Health Legislation Would Offer Alaskans Greater Protection - In his opening remarks at the Alaska Health Summit Monday in Anchorage, Department of Health and Social Services Commissioner Joel Gilbertson announced that Governor Frank H. Murkowski will introduce new public health legislation to the legislature in January. Officials say the new legislation will ensure public health experts have more clearly defined legal authorities to identify and control newly emerging and existing health threats while continuing to protect Alaskans' individual rights. - More...

Alaska: Governor will propose child protection package to Legislature - Alaska Department of Health and Social Services Commissioner Joel Gilbertson announced Monday a package of fiscal year 2006 budget proposals to expand protections to Alaska's children who enter state custody.

In addition, Gilbertson announced that legislation regarding child protection confidentiality statutes will be proposed to the state Legislature in January. DHSS will be working with interested legislators to complete the draft of the proposed legislation.

"Our kids are the future of Alaska," said Gilbertson. "I am taking the opportunity during National Adoption Awareness Month to discuss proposals that address key areas of opportunity to ensure Alaska's children are safe - to get children the services they need for a healthy and productive future." - More...

Ketchikan: Wal-Mart and Coast Guard Spouse's Association of Ketchikan Team Up to Fulfill Wishes - The Coast Guard Spouse's Association of Ketchikan is again teaming up with Wal-Mart and WISH to ensure a merry Christmas for many needy Ketchikan families. The Coast Guard Spouse's Association has placed a decorated tree in Wal-Mart where people can select families or individuals for whom to buy gifts. WISH (Women In Safe Homes) has provided the information for families in need.

Saturday the Coast Guard Spouse's Association of Ketchikan set up the WISH treet at Wal-Mart and decorated the cart where donated items can be dropped off. Donated items will be accepted starting November 27th through Dec 23rd. - More...
