photosKetchikan: Coast Guard boat crew rescues father and son - A Coast Guard boat crew rescued a father and son from cold Alaskan waters Tuesday afternoon after their sail boat capsized near Ketchikan.

Personnel at Coast Guard Station Ketchikan received a phone call at 1:23 p.m. from a Good Samaritan who reported seeing a sail boat capsize south of Ketchikan near Mountain Point.  Two rescue boat crews were dispatched from Station Ketchikan.  The rescue crews arrived on scene at 1:50 p.m. and pulled Steve Hales, 54, and his 21 year old son Josh, from the water.  Both men spent approximately one hour in the water. - More...

photosThe State Capitol and Its Marble and keeping the capital in Juneau - A recent news item in the Anchorage daily paper mentioned that a group of Juneau boosters, chaired by Mayor Bruce Botelho, hope to build a new Alaska Capitol building to be leased to the state at completion. They call themselves the Capitol Planning Commission and expect to announce a nationwide design competition in November. A new Capitol building would replace Juneau's present six-story Art Deco treasure.
