jpg Dale McFeattersDale McFeatters: Stupid fans ruin sports for everyone - When I was 8 or 9, my summer camp baseball team got a chance to meet Pirates legend Ralph Kiner. He shook hands, kidded us about our having a better season than the woeful Bucs and then went off to do his warm-ups. I'm sure we stood there in dumbstruck awe the whole time.... It never occurred to me to punch him in the nose. - More...

Craig: City of Craig Becomes State's First Quota Entity Community - The North Pacific Fishery Management Council (NPFMC) announced Wednesday the approval of the first non-profit organization to be named officially as a Community Quota Entity (CQE), allowing the community of Craig, Alaska to purchase halibut and sablefish quota shares (QS) on the open market.

"This program will allow the residents of Craig to catch sablefish in their own waters, and provide an opportunity for new jobs in a community that has been in dire straits over the years by the outward migration of IFQs and limited entry permits." - More...

photosBetty King the Dog Lady; Ketchikan's one-woman humane society - There is an alley in downtown Ketchikan named Betty King Alley. It's a very narrow little mid-block lane that begins on Dock Street and cuts through to Mission and then to Mill Street. Mill is a comparatively new (1972) street named for the sprawling and now-gone Ketchikan Spruce Mill that buzzed and rumbled with activity at the site for some eighty years. A few years back, the previously anonymous alley was finally named. The name chosen was Daly Alley, chosen to honor one of the Spruce Mills pioneer families. It was a dubious honor, actually. And at least one member of that family may not have been delighted with the tribute. - Read the rest of this feature story by June Allen...
