jpg Dave KifferDave Kiffer: Deck Those Halls - Okay, it is after Thanksgiving, you may now put up your Christmas lights!

I certainly don't want to be a Grinch about spreading the holiday cheer, but it has come to my attention that holiday lights have been going up earlier and earlier each year. - More...

Alaska: Gov. Murkowski Testifies to FERC on Pipeline Regulations; Proposed rules lack guarantees of in-state and explorers access - Alaska Governor Frank H. Murkowski testified before the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission in Anchorage on Friday on the need to amend proposed federal gas pipeline regulations to guarantee access and capacity.

"Unstranding the bountiful gas resources of Alaska's North Slope is the highest priority of my administration," Murkowski said. "I urge the FERC to require that a pipeline's open season process establish as clearly as possible the rules of the game for access."- More...

Alaska: Governor Plans Aggressive Energy Agenda for 2005; Roads to resources, Bristol Bay exploration, Tundra Travel on tap - Alaska Governor Frank H. Murkowski will ask the Alaska Legislature to approve a 2005 energy agenda that promotes oil and gas exploration around the state and funds efforts to secure a natural gas pipeline agreement.

Included in the request is a $20 million state roads package that will fund transportation projects which spur oil and gas development, including funding to continue analysis of a road from Prudhoe Bay to Point Thompson.

"As a resource state, it is absolutely imperative that we invest in the infrastructure that will allow us to expand our economic base," Murkowski said. "North Slope oil and gas production pays for virtually everything we do, so much of what we are proposing today is in support of oil and gas activities, whether it is directly on the slope or not." - More...

Alaska: Temperature Trivia for the Mercury-Addicted by Ned Rozell - I admit it: I'm a thermometer junkie. ...I have three of them attached to my home, and I've memorized three phone numbers of recorded voices that tell me the temperature at three other places. I know I have a problem, but the busy signals I hear during a cold snap tell me I'm not alone. - More...

photosBetty King the Dog Lady; Ketchikan's one-woman humane society - There is an alley in downtown Ketchikan named Betty King Alley. It's a very narrow little mid-block lane that begins on Dock Street and cuts through to Mission and then to Mill Street. Mill is a comparatively new (1972) street named for the sprawling and now-gone Ketchikan Spruce Mill that buzzed and rumbled with activity at the site for some eighty years. A few years back, the previously anonymous alley was finally named. The name chosen was Daly Alley, chosen to honor one of the Spruce Mills pioneer families. It was a dubious honor, actually. And at least one member of that family may not have been delighted with the tribute. - Read the rest of this feature story by June Allen...
