Consultants working on the City of Ketchikan's Port Expansion Project presented before a packed Ketchikan Chamber of Commerce luncheon Thursday four alternatives for two new cruise ship berths in downtown Ketchikan. As Deanna Garrison reports, they say Ketchikan's port expansion is the largest ever undertaken in Alaska and perhaps on the west coast.

Alaska: New Tourism Marketing Formula Will Boost Industry; Governor Signs SB 254 to Lower Required Match to 50 Percent - Alaska's tourism industry will be better able to provide jobs for Alaskans and attract more visitors to the state, after Governor Frank H. Murkowski signed legislation Thursday that lowers the percentage of money the industry must provide to receive state matching marketing funds.

"We want to support the visitor industry's success in creating jobs and generating revenue for our state by attracting tourists," Murkowski said. "This agreement will help encourage the long-term health of this important sector of the economy and the thousands of tourism jobs it generates in our state." - Read more...

Ketchikan: Wright Brothers' Master Pilot Awards Presented; August is Alaska Aviation Safety Month - In a ceremony held on August 3rd in Juneau, the Federal Aviation Administration kicked off Alaska Aviation Safety Month by recognizing Ken Eichner of Ketchikan and three other Southeast Alaska pilots with the Wright Brothers' Master Pilot Award. The award recognizes those who have contributed and maintained safe flight operations for 50 or more consecutive years of piloting aircraft. - Read more...

Ketchikan: First City Republican Women's Club Endorses Stedman - The First City Republican Women's Club has unanimously voted to support State Senator Bert Stedman in his race for State Senate Seat in District A.

Senator Stedman was appointed by Governor Frank Murkowski on November 30, 2003, to fill the vacancy left by Senator Robin Taylor who took an administrative job with the state government. - Read more...
