Ketchikan: 2012 Sam Pitcher Scholarship Recipients Announced - Six students have been selected to receive Sam Pitcher Music Scholarships to attend summer music programs in 2012. The students are 7th graders Ada Castle, daughter of James and Colleen Castle, and Natalya Truitt, daughter of Phil and Eileen Truitt, 8th grader Wyatt Anderson, son of Charles and Theresa Anderson, 9th grader Sarah Gucker, daughter of Eric and Cathy Gucker, 10th grader Micah Long, daughter of Tim and Kay Long, and 12th grader Geralyn Lovell, daughter of Stephanie Lovell. The $500 scholarships are  awarded on the basis of merit, goals and musicianship. Five recipients plan to attend the Sitka Fine Arts Camp. Micah Long plans to attend Camp Electric in Nashville, TN.

Ada Castle studies flute and vocals. Ada wants to improve on the flute and learn to play the piccolo. She hopes to get more involved in choir and in jazz. She also dances with Ketchikan Theatre Ballet and hopes to take a dance class at camp in addition to her music classes.

Natalya Truitt studies trumpet and vocals. She wants to improve her trumpet skills, especially circular breathing. She also dances with the Knightlites so hopes to take a dance class as well.

Wyatt Anderson plays the tenor sax. In addition to participating in several bands, Wyatt is also involved with theater and First City Players. Wyatt hopes to improve his improvisational skills on the sax. Someday he would like to play with a college band.

Sarah Gucker is receiving the Sam Pitcher Music Scholarship for the second time.  She has been playing flute for six years and participating in choir. Sarah recently started learning the violin. She hopes to continue to learn to play new instruments. Sarah foresees music as always being an important part of her life.

Micah Long is also a second time recipient. She is primarily interested in vocals but also plays the piano. Micah is very passionate about music. She is particularly interested in the Christian music industry. Camp Electric will allow her to explore opportunities in this field of music.

Geralyn Lovell plays saxophone and violin in addition to vocals. She has also studied African drumming. She especially loves playing sax and hopes to continue to gain more musical experiences. This will be her first time attending the Sitka Fine Arts Camp. - More...

Alaska: MCAF Establishes Alaska Monitoring Program for Japanese Tsunami Debris; Senator Murkowski plans round table discussion of Alaska’s preparation - The Juneau-based Marine Conservation Alliance Foundation (MCAF), which has conducted more than 72 marine debris cleanups throughout Alaska, is establishing a monitoring program to locate and identify Japanese tsunami debris making landfall on Alaska’s shores.  This and other Japanese tsunami debris preparations will be discussed at Senator Murkowski’s round table discussion on Friday, January 20 in Anchorage at the UAA Campus, Gorsuch Commons room 107 from 10:30-11:30am.

“The monitoring program is designed to examine beaches in a systematic manner and tabulate the number of objects arriving on Alaska beaches.  In addition, we will also use a random sampling technique to detect statistical changes in the overall volume of debris which could be attributed to the tsunami,” stated Dave Gaudet, the MCAF Marine Debris Program Coordinator.

MCAF’s weekly surveys will take place near the communities of Craig, Sitka, Yakutat and Kodiak and will help NOAA and others plan future cleanups. The results will be posted online.

Debris from the Japanese tsunami has been reported along the beaches of Washington, British Columbia and Alaska.  While debris of Japanese origin is commonly found on Alaska beaches, the recently reported debris: floats, large empty containers and other light debris, is consistent with expectations that it may be from the tsunami.  This wind-driven debris is estimated to travel as quickly as 20 miles per day, much faster than the seven miles per day of those items subject only to movement by the current, which should arrive in 2013. - More...

Alaska: PUPPY BUYERS BARK UP THE WRONG TREE; Online Puppy-Selling Scam Takes Consumers for a Bad Walk - The Better Business Bureau serving Alaska, Oregon and Western Washington has received reports of scams targeting consumers looking to purchase puppies online.

Legitimate-looking websites and classified ads entice pet shoppers with cute puppy pictures, detailed descriptions, and below-average prices. When shoppers contact sellers and attempt to make purchases, they are directed to wire money—typically overseas—to complete paperwork and secure shipping. Buyers then receive emails that contain shipping receipts, animal crate numbers, flight numbers and times, and other seemingly genuine information.

Unfortunately, there are no puppies; and flight information and courier names are rarely verifiable. BBB reports indicate that these scammers will go so far as to claim that animals have arrived locally, but cannot be released until further processing fees are paid—by wire transfer. - More...

Alaska: Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air Operating Limited Schedules In Seattle; Customers advised to check current flight status; continued cancellations and delays possible due to changing weather conditions - Freezing rain and snow continue to affect Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air operations, which forced the carriers to cancel 310 flights to and from Seattle by early evening affecting 29,000 passengers. Only 15 of Alaska’s 114 daily flights and one Horizon flights had departed Seattle by that time as the region was hit by an extraordinary ice storm.

“We are doing our best to operate as many flights as possible to get people where they need to go as we cope with severe ice accumulation on our planes,” Alaska Airlines’ President Brad Tilden said. “We appreciate customers’ patience and understanding as we contend with the freezing rain that has disrupted travel throughout the region. Our operational decisions will continue to be guided by our commitment to safety.”

Both airlines are working to re-accommodate passengers whose flights have been disrupted. Passengers booked on canceled flights to or from Seattle between Jan. 17 and Jan. 20 may request a refund of the unused portion of their ticket at www.alaskaair.com through Jan. 25. - More...

letter Ice on North Tongass Higway By Deborah Hayden - AK DOT deserves much praise for plowing North Tongass Highway during and after the recent 16 inch snowfall. Now it would be great if the Department of Transportation would sand and de-ice the highway. It is a sheet ice on much of its surface. Many people have not put studded snow tires on their cars and trucks. It is very dangerous with these vehicles on the highway and no sand. - More...

letter Who Dropped The Ball? (Poor Road Conditions) By Lee Caskey - Is it just me or has anyone else noticed the general lack of maintenance in regards to snow/ice removal this year on the Tongass Highway? (North & South) It seems like every time the snow falls or the temperature drops, it's become common for the roads to become very difficult, if not dangerous for commuters. From ice control products not being laid out to waiting until the snow stops to run plows there doesn't seem to be enough being done lately. Personally I don't mind a little challenge while driving, but when we're talking about the safety of families, law-enforcement officers, emergency responders or utility crews there's no excuse for recent conditions. - More...

letter MSC 2nd Recertification of Alaska Salmon fishery By James Browning - AFDF has received letters from eight major primary salmon processors advising AFDF they are phasing out their financial support for the Marine Stewardship Council salmon certification program. Collectively these processors account for approximately 72% of the Alaska salmon harvest. They have given us notice they will support the MSC program for Alaska salmon only through October of 2012, when the current certificate expires. The eight processors include Trident Seafoods, Icicle Seafoods, Ocean Beauty Seafoods, Peter Pan Seafoods, Alaska General Seafoods, E & E Foods, Kwikpak Fisheries and North Pacific Seafoods. - More...

letter RE: AMHS By Joey Garcia - In the Jan 16th caption of Charlotte Tanner's re AHMS, I am intrigued having to consider that the cost of swinging out of Ketchikan to Seattle via Bellingham has been way too high and exorbitant. This includes the Alaska Airlines sort of monopoly without any choices whatsover. The only way out of Ketchikan, is to "sit down and shut up". - More...

letter Boat Tax By Scott Cragun - Why is it that after 5 years I am being billed for a tax on a skiff that I sold 4 weeks after I bought it? It seems amazing to me that the "KGB" would send this invoice calling for 5 years of past due interest on a bill that I have never received previously and demand interest on a billing that seems to be illegal. - More...

letter RE: AMHS By Charlotte Tanner - I agree completely with Captain Art Johnson. I used to ride the ferries down to Seattle (at that time) frequently. I rarely do so anymore due to the cost. I would rather go to Prince Rupert and drive as it is cheaper and takes the same amount of time. - More...

letter RE: AMHS FERRY By Don Husler - I also think the Alaska Ferry System is making a huge mistake. If we are going to build day boat then we should be building day boats. Similar to the Aurora, Keep it under 1600 tons. We are never going to get rid of a mainline ferry. But a 350' ferry is not our answer. - More..

letter Re: Von Ryan's Express by Ken Bylund - "But you are what you hate?" Poor man, so much hate. Your ideas would sound so much more reasonable if you left out words like; serial killer, piss-ant, terrorist, dumber than a rock, greased down pipsqueak, crap, self-deceiving fool, cheap bastard, wienermobile driver, dufus, cretin, contemporary monster, and then inserting an affinity to Adolf Hitler... does this really work for you? - More...

Raven's Way thanks those who have provided this support and helped our students be successful. - More...

letter What Happened to the American Dream? By Cecilia Rice - 2012 will be one of the most important election years in the history of our country.  We have accepted the pitiful performance of our political representatives far too long.  Congress’ approval rate is now 10%.  It is the most dysfunctional Congress since the civil war. - More...

letter Alaska Marine Highway System By Capt. Art Johnson - I'm writing this, because of my concern for the direction that the Alaska Marine Highway System is taking. I'm a resident of Ketchikan and strongly support the idea of building any new ferries in the Ketchikan Shipyard. However, I think it is a mistake to build the 350 foot Alaska Class Ferries (TAKU size) without staterooms. Apparently, the no stateroom idea is being driven by the day boat concept and zone system of operation. This would probably provide for a vessel running between Prince Rupert and Ketchikan, another between Ketchikan and Petersburg and then from Petersburg to Juneau and finally from Juneau to Skagway. - More...

letter If you are sick of Washington politics... By Irving B. Welchons III - We have a do nothing congress because we have a do nothing citizenry. In 2010 less than 38 percent of eligible voters voted.  In that election 88 percent of incumbents were reelected. Most American voters don’t vote and those that do keep electing the same people.  Perhaps the reason people don’t vote is that they feel they must pick the lesser of two evils.  You could give voters a better choice. - More...
