Profile America: Monday, June 7th. One of the key elements of modern home entertainment - the video cassette recorder - is 29 years old today. After it was introduced, watching movies at home or videotape shot on trips and at family events soon became a popular pastime. Sony brought out the first VCR in the Betamax format; but after a bruising marketplace battle, the video home system or VHS - became the standard. Today, nearly 9-out-of-10 households in the U.S. have a VCR. However, in the last few years, sales have fallen off sharply. Now, digital video disc players outsell VCRs by nearly 3-to-1. Sales of DVD players are close to 3-billion dollars a year. Source U.S. Census Bureau.

Ketchikan: Kids' All American Fishing Derby - Kids ages 3 to 15 years of age headed down to Ketchikan City Park Saturday morning to take part in the annual Kids' All American Fishing Derby. In preparation for the event which is held nationally, the ponds at City Park were stocked with rainbow trout which were raised at the Ketchikan Tribal Hatchery operated by the Ketchikan Indian Community.

In celebration of National Fishing Week, the local two-hour event - in addition to opportunities for age category fishing - provided fun activities such as fish printing, casting competition and lure making. And... free balloons and prizes. - Read more...

photosAlaska's Deepwater Highway; A part of Alaska history - When the first Alaska state ferry sailed northbound through the Inside Passage of Alaska on its maiden voyage in January of 1963, there was rejoicing along the entire route from Ketchikan to Haines at the head of Lynn Canal! At last! Cars and even trucks and vans could now travel to and from isolated island-bound towns all along the 450-mile length of Southeastern Alaska's Panhandle. At either end they could roll off the ferry's ramp onto terra firma, connected to road systems north or south! The roadless towns of the famed Inside Passage finally had a "highway" from Prince Rupert B.C. to Haines, Alaska - even if it happened to be paved with salt water and used marine charts instead of road maps. - Read the rest of this story by June Allen...
