15th Annual Sam Pitcher Music Scholarship Recipients Announced

The 2018 recipients are: 7th grader Genevieve Hiatt, daughter of Bret Hiatt and Jennifer Simpson; 7th grader Annie Paxton, daughter of Doug and Kacie Paxton; 8th grader Rachel Anne Lomat, daughter of Roberto and Jennifer Lomat; 9th grader Henry Clark, son of Lance and Jessica Clark; 9th grader Abby Gaugler, daughter of Gary and Deanna Gaugler; and 9th grader Josh Ryan, son of Dr. Jeff and Ellen Ryan. The scholarships are for $500 each awarded on the basis of merit, goals and musicianship.
Genevieve Hiatt has studied trumpet and piano, wants to improve her trumpet skills, and become a better jazz soloist. Annie Paxton plays trumpet, keyboard, and sings with the goal of performing in and playing with musical theater, hopefully someday on Broadway. Rachel Anne Lomat plays both clarinet and tenor saxophone, wants to expand her musical capabilities, and broaden her interest in different types of music. Henry Clark has expanded instruments he plays to alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, and clarinet, with plans to continue taking music classes in college. Abby Gaugler sings, plays flute and saxophone, and hopes to get a college degree in music to perhaps teach music. Josh Ryan’s instruments are the trombone and piano, and his goal is to major in music education in college and/or play professionally. 71 scholarships have been awarded since The Sam Pitcher Memorial Scholarship Fund (SPMSF) was established following Sam’s death at age 16 in 2003. The mission of the Sam Pitcher Music Scholarship is to help Ketchikan musicians in grades 7 – 12 attend summer music programs like the ones Sam enjoyed. Dale Curtis, Joy Davis, Jack and Bev Davies, Gail Klein, Jay Johnson, Jeff Karlson, Roy and Tina McPherson, and chair Karen Pitcher serve as an Advisory Committee of the Ketchikan Area Arts and Humanities Council.
