Ketchikan, Alaska - The recipients
of this year's Sam Pitcher Music Scholarships are sisters Amber
and Courtney Kiffer, daughters of Karleen and Ken Kiffer of Ketchikan.
Amber and Courtney have each been awarded $500 scholarships to
attend summer music programs.

Amber has been playing trumpet for over 5 years and is a sophomore
at Kayhi with a 4.0 GPA. She plans to use this scholarship to
attend Jamey Aebersold's Summer Jazz Workshop at the University
of Louisville in Louisville, KY. By attending this workshop Amber
hopes to be able to improve her ability to improvise and perform.
Amber presently plays in the Wind Ensemble, Jazz Band and Pep
Band at Kayhi as well as McPherson's Windjammers and Soundwaves
Jazz Clubs. She plans to pursue a career in music after high
school.
Courtney plays piano, alto
and tenor saxophone and is in the 8th grade with a 4.0 GPA. She
plans to use her scholarship to attend the Sitka Fine Arts Camp
in Sitka, AK. She hopes to improve her improvisational and sight-reading
skills on both the piano and saxophone. She presently plays with
the 8th grade school band as well as McPherson's Windjammers,
Soundwaves and Discovery Jazz Clubs.
The Sam Pitcher Memorial Fund
was established by the family and friends of Sam Pitcher to honor
his memory because of his great love and talent for music. The
fund awards scholarships to students in grades 7-12 to attend
summer music programs. Tax deductible contributions can be made
to the Sam Pitcher Memorial Fund, c/o the Ketchikan Area Arts
and Humanities Council, 716 Totem Way, Ketchikan, AK 99901.
