(SitNews) Ketchikan, Alaska - Six Ketchikan students have been selected to receive Sam Pitcher Music Scholarships for 2016. The Sam Pitcher Memorial Scholarship Fund awarded $500 scholarships to 9th graders Connor Wodehouse, Katelin Kalbaugh, Andrea Short, and 7th graders Charlie Blair, Henry Clark, and Tristan Dahl.

All six recipients plan to attend the Sitka Fine Arts Camp this summer. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of merit, goals and musicianship, which means that these young musicians have worked hard to earn this recognition.

Recipients: 9th graders Connor Wodehouse, Katelin Kalbaugh, Andrea Short, and 7th graders Charlie Blair, Henry Clark, and Tristan Dahl

Katelin Kalbaugh, daughter of Greg and Myra Kalbaugh, was also a 2015 scholarship recipient. Her primary instrument is the trumpet along with vocals. She has recently started piano lessons. If you attended the fall musical, “Mary Poppins,” you will remember her great performance as Jane Banks. Katelin hopes to continue to improve in all aspects of her musicality working towards her goal of someday becoming a music teacher and performer.

Andrea Short, daughter of Rod and Michelle short, plays clarinet and is also a vocalist. She is the clarinet section leader in the KHS Symphonic Band. Her goals include expanding her vocal range, continuing to improve on the clarinet, and possibly starting another instrument such as the oboe or bassoon.

Charlie Blair, son of Roy and Sandi Blair, currently plays trumpet, but he is also interested in learning guitar and saxophone. He hopes to further his musical goal of becoming a better all-around musician.

Henry Clark, son of Lance and Jessica Clark, plays clarinet, but has recently started learning to play alto saxophone. His goals include improving his vocal abilities, and becoming a better saxophone player. He is also interested in performing in musical theater productions.

Tristan Dahl, son of Christine Dahl, plays trumpet. He is interested in improving his skills with the hope of eventually playing with big bands. He enjoys playing solos, and is thinking about learning another instrument.

Connor Wodehouse, son of Russell Wodehouse, plays trombone along with vocals. He was chosen for the Southeast Honor Choir this year, and hopes to audition successfully for similar opportunities in the future.

Scholarship recipients are selected by a Ketchikan Area Arts & Humanities advisory committee consisting of nine people, including Sam’s mother, Karen Pitcher. "Reviewing the work of Ketchikan’s talented youth is always a pleasure. We are honored to provide support to the talented young musicians in Ketchikan," stated Pitcher is a news release.

The Sam Pitcher Music Scholarship Fund was started following Sam’s death in 2003 at age 16. Sam’s passion was music and he loved all types of music and especially enjoyed playing and listening to music with his friends. Sam played the trumpet, fluglehorn and electric guitar with the McPherson Jazz Bands, the rock group “The Rubber Band,” and the KHS Wind Ensemble and Jazz Bands. He had the opportunity to attend both the Sitka Fine Arts Camp and Interlochen Fine Arts Camp in Michigan. The experiences gained while participating in these camps were very significant for Sam. The goal of the Sam Pitcher Music Scholarship is to help give other young musicians the opportunity to expand their music horizons by attending similar summer music programs.

Two $500 scholarships were first awarded in 2004. In this 13th year, the number of scholarships awarded total 60, which results in $30,000 being distributed to recipients. The primary fundraiser for the scholarships is the Sam Pitcher Memorial Concert, “An Evening of Jazz, Blues and Rock,” which usually takes place in December.

Tax-deductible donations can be made to the Sam Pitcher Music Scholarship Fund at any time in care of The Ketchikan Area Arts and Humanities Council, 330 Main Street, Ketchikan, AK 99901. The Sam Pitcher Memorial Scholarship Fund is a fiscally sponsored project of the Ketchikan Area Arts and Humanities Council (KAAHC).
