2005 Sam Pitcher Music Scholarship Winners Announced

Ketchikan, Alaska - The recipients of this year's Sam Pitcher Music Scholarships are twins Jamie and Jeffery Karlson. Jamie and Jeffery have each been awarded $500 scholarships which they plan to apply towards attending Interlochen Fine Arts Camp in Michigan. They auditioned along with four other finalists to win the scholarships. Judging the auditions were local musicians Jim Alguire, Sarah Corporon, Heidi Hays and Carrie Tocco.

Jamie and Jeffery are both 10th grade honor roll students at Ketchikan High School. Jamie has been playing the flute for 6 years, the tenor saxophone for 4 years and the piccolo for 2 years. Jeffery has been playing the trumpet for 6 years. Both hope to major in music performance in college and some day play with symphony orchestras. They presently play with several Kayhi bands, the McPherson Jazz Clubs, other community bands, and have been selected for Honor bands.

Their parents are Debbie and Dan Karlson of Ketchikan.

The Sam Pitcher Memorial Scholarship Fund was established by the family and friends of Sam Pitcher to honor his memory because of his great love for music and the rewarding experiences he had attending summer music programs. The fund awards scholarships to Ketchikan students in grades 7 - 12 to help them attend similar summer music programs. The Sam Pitcher Memorial Fund is an advisory committee of the Ketchikan Area Arts and Humanities Council.
