Alaska: International FAS Awareness Day Sept. 9; Communities across state host activities for fifth year of awareness event - Today Alaskan's across the state will join advocates from around the world to increase public awareness and education about Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) and all other birth defects that result from a woman's consumption of alcohol during pregnancy. Governor Frank Murkowski has issued an FAS Awareness Day proclamation calling for all Alaskans "to promote awareness of the effects of prenatal exposure to alcohol, to enhance our statewide prevention efforts, to increase compassion for those individuals so affected, to minimize further effects, and to ensure healthier communities across Alaska in the future."

Ketchikan City Mayor Bob Weinstein and Ketchikan Borough Mayor Mike Salazar have both issued proclamations recognizing the day. - Read more...

Alaska: Governor proclaims September Alcohol & Drug Addiction Recovery Month in Alaska - Alaska Governor Frank Murkowski has issued an Executive Proclamation designating September 2003 as Alcohol & Drug Addiction Recovery Month and encouraging all citizens to support men, women and youths who are in substance abuse recovery and treatment, and their families. "Substance abuse and co-occurring mental disorders and physical illnesses affect thousands of Alaskans of all ages, races and ethnic backgrounds in all communities," Governor Murkowski said.
