Alaska: AK Court Re-legalizes Use of Marijuana By Adults in Private Homes - The Alaska Court of Appeals has re-legalized the use of marijuana by adults in private homes handing down their decision Friday. State Attorney General Greg Renkes was directed to review the case and to make recommendations on how the state should proceed.

The court heard the appeal by David S. Noy, who was convicted of possessing less than eight ounces of marijuana in his home. Noy had appealed his conviction arguing that he was convicted for engaging in conduct that is protected under the privacy provision of the Alaska State Constitution and the Appeals Court agreed that Noy's conduct was constitutionally protected. - Read more...

People of Ketchikan: And I shall wear purple... Long time Ketchikan resident Patti Fay Hickox decked out in purple celebrated her 59th birthday Friday by doing what she does best, bringing happiness to others. Hickox has dedicated her life to supporting and empowering children and youth to have safe and healthy lives. She spent most of the past month working and organizing the annual "Dance With Logs" - a back to school dance for Ketchikan teens.

On her birthday, Hickox was busy setting up and chaperoning the dance Friday night so the youth of Ketchikan could have a safe and drug free fun-filled evening. - View a larger photo...

Alaska: Beluga whales stranded in Turnagain Arm float free - A group of 46 beluga whales stranded Thursday afternoon in a minus tide in Turnagain Arm have apparently floated free and swam to safety.

NOAA Fisheries officials conducted an aerial survey at mid-day Friday to try and detect if any whales were injured or killed in the temporary stranding. Aerial surveys will continue into the Labor Day weekend. - Read more...
