Re: KPU (Telephone Division)

Dear Charles, and other owners of Ketchikan Public Utilities (KPU),

It has never been incumbent upon the City Council to do anything in governing Ketchikan that would REALLY benefit its citizens and or customers. KPU Telephone Division is the only division in KPU that makes more money than it spends; that would be called, by any other name, PROFIT. KPU Telephone Div, is constantly called upon to give monies to the Electrical Division, if you read the minutes of City Council Meetings very carefully you will note that on occasion the Council is asked by the Managers of KPU to do so and they do.

What I get from this, is a fact that says cities are NOT SUPPOSED to make money from the services provided by that govt. Hell's Bells that might result in a lowering of the Property Tax Mill Rate, a revaluing of govt.services. Or, heaven forbid, a provision for better, more responsive services provided by our local govt. Yeah, right.

What seems to be happening however, is that our local leaders are running pell mell to sell to the highest bidder, the one service that they cannot do enough to destroy. No matter that Ketchikan has enjoyed up until this latest screw up, a reasonably priced responsive, competently run phone system.

So, what does it mean for Ketchikan when The CITY does manage to sell the Telephone Division of KPU? HIGHER RATES, CHARGES FOR EVERYTHING OVERLOOKED OR PROVIDED BY PRESENT OPERATION. Kiss your phone system GOODBYE, folks.

Yours in competent govt.
