I am running for School Board because I believe our purpose serves Ketchikan’s most valuable resource: our children. Since being appointed to the School Board in February, I have served with consistent dedication to ensure I heard all input from our public stakeholders and that our important business was addressed. Having grown up in Ketchikan, attending Houghtaling Elementary, Schoenbar Middle School and graduating from Kayhi, I bring to the position the perspective of a student from the District combined with the current perspective of a parent of a student currently in the District.

If re-elected, I can provide consistency moving forward as we continue to work though our current issues, including reaching a unified collective bargaining agreement with our teachers. I believe continual communication and collaboration is key in reaching that goal. I believe we must strive to build solid relationships not only with our students and staff, but with parents, teachers and our community members. Only together can we provide the best education in a safe and constructive learning environment. That is why I have strived to lead by example and involve myself in varying school events and activities. I joined in the Elizabeth Peratovich Day celebration and later visited with students at the Science Fair at Houghtaling Elementary School. I participated in the Kanayama Japanese exhange program interactive learning event at the library to learn more about that great cultural exchange opportunity, spent time with 1st graders at Pt. Higgins Elementary School and with graduating seniors at Kayhi talking about careers in aviation, and re-experienced the 8th grade survival trip, spending 3 days surviving on a remote island with a great group of young ladies, parents and a wonderful science teacher.

I feel strongly about the need for a review and revision of our current policies and procedures; as the framework for how we conduct business, it is essential we have a strong foundation. I fully support diversity and inclusion in all aspects of District, and look forward to developing our strategic plan to meet our goals, including continuing to be fiscally responsible.

I would appreciate your vote on election day with my promise of continued commitment to ensuring our students are provided high quality instruction within a positive environment reflective of our community needs.
