I’m James Montgomery and I’m also running for the Ketchikan Borough Assembly. Most of you may know me from when I was the General Manager of the Cape Fox Lodge. If not let me tell you a little about me.

Why am I running? The sound bite-answer is: I want to be a conduit for the people of Ketchikan so they can have a connective voice on the Borough Assembly.

All too often I have heard people comment; “it sure would be nice if someone would take the time to address this or that issue” or “why is it that it seems the list of supplies my kids are supposed to take to school every year is getting longer and longer and yet they want us to pay higher school taxes?” or “why are they repaving that road over there AGAIN and my road over here still has a pot hole in it that can swallow a car?” While we have amazing people on the Assembly, some of the people I spoke with were looking for someone who they could connect with and I believe I am that person.

I am not your typical candidate. If you were to check the boxes you will find that I am a registered Log Cabin Republican, very conservative on some issues, while stanchly liberal on others. I am a long time Alaskan, Jewish and married for 35 years. We lived in Anchorage for 15 years and fell in love with Ketchikan in 1994 on our 10th Anniversary when due to an unscheduled AK Airlines mechanical layover, we ended up staying a couple of days at the Cape Fox - Westmark. It was the Cape Fox that brought me back to Ketchikan a little over 4 years ago where I was the GM there for 2 years. I’ve owned several successful businesses; in Anchorage I was a Realtor, owned the very successful Aurora Winds Resort and produced a weekly Television show for 5 years. I have over 25 years as a Hospitality Professional; most recently as a “Property Fixer” wherein I managed to turn around Hotels that were on the brink of financial disaster and closing their doors to having strong positive cash flows and winning Awards.

I strongly believe we must take care of educating our kids and that starts with taking care of our Teachers. We desperately need affordable housing and we need to address the budget. I have always been for fiscal responsibility and I am very creative when it comes to knowing how to stretch a dollar for its best use.

Ketchikan is a unique community of strong individuals. That’s what really makes Alaska so special; our strength, our ability to stand up and stand on our own. But that is also what can cause our internal problems. In reality Ketchikan is rather small, only about 32 miles from end to end, a town of less than 14,000 people including our children and yet we have over 4 major entities vying for control of your monies. There is of course the Borough Assembly and then we have the City of Ketchikan, the City of Saxman and the School Board. I believe we need to work toward a more symbiotic relationship working together for the betterment of all of Ketchikan as a whole, including those who cannot speak for themselves who are represented by the tireless work of the individuals who are represented everyday by our amazing non-profit community.

You have several choices on October 2nd Candidates that can spout numbers until your head spins, Candidates with the abilities to paint amazing pictures with their written words and you have me. Someone who is passionate about what I believe in and about what I do and who will fight to get what’s right for the people of Ketchikan not just for today but for tomorrow and for tomorrow’s tomorrow.

I am running because I want to be a conduit for the people of Ketchikan who want to have a connective voice on the Borough Assembly. I want to be the type of Assembly person who will work for you to always try and find a solution to questions and concerns put forth by the community. I hope you will consider voting for me October 2nd. James Montgomery for Borough Assembly
