Candidate Statement Why I'm running:

Having had the honor of serving my first term as a borough assembly member, I have come to learn and appreciate the many aspects of our fine community that makes it so charming.

jpg Felix Wong, Re-Elect

2018 Candidate for the Ketchikan Borough Assembly

I have decided to run for re-election because I believe that what we need is Servant Leadership and there are like-minded organizations, causes, and people worth serving and advocating for.

I do not pretend nor assert to know more than my fellow residents and have learned that being able to listen objectively goes a long way in being able to work together and solve problems.

Employment:

After working at the shipyard as a marine electrician for 4 years and having lead the electrical team through a couple of large electrical upgrade projects, I have decided to run my own business doing professional photography and independent marine electrical work. This experience in itself has opened my eyes to challenges and issues that could be solved on a policy level to help make life easier for future startups.

Community Involvement:

Now that I run my own business and have much more control of my time, I have been consistently involved in various events organized by some of the most dedicated non-profit organizations I have ever seen.

I can be seen regularly working the sound board for various events organized by, and not limited to, Ketchikan Theater Ballet, First City Players, Ketchikan Area Arts and Humanity Council, Marshall Kelly's annual Raining Man, Holy Name Catholic School's annual Alaska Day Auction and Clover Pass Community Church's special events to name a few.

Through community involvement, I have come to be inspired and impressed by everyone’s commitment to each other and to our town’s iconically charming character. I have also seen these same familiar faces in borough staff who do great work for our community behind the scenes.

Priorities:

I believe that a little investment in education goes a long way. In Singapore where I was raised, I saw first-hand how a commitment to a well educated workforce was able to lift people out of poverty and open doors to opportunities and outside investment. Some of the same good people mentioned above whom I volunteered alongside the many events year after year are the same good people who are putting their heart and soul into educating the next generation of brilliant minds and hard workers. Even as a childless and single man, I see value in investing a fraction of my income into the school system because I as a business owner would very much like to come to hire some good local talent!

Support for non-profit organizations with regards to our community’s quality of life, in my view, is a smart way to really stretch the tax dollar. Our local non-profit organizations are run by highly competent and even self-sacrificial individuals who are committed to making Ketchikan a great place to live in year-round. While it is true that the borough does not have social service powers, it is my belief that as fellow human beings, there are some issues that inevitably plague any community that we should not ignore and our local non-profit organizations are there for just that need.

Economic development is one sensible way to expand our means to afford the above-mentioned priorities. Even though the borough does not explicitly have economic development powers, I believe that our local government supports economic development in a variety of direct and indirect ways through its various policies and decision making of the assembly. I for one have proven to be happy to listen to and support creative business ideas and hope to play a part in brainstorming various ideas that an enterprising community-minded business can solve for Ketchikan.

I look forward to the honor of serving you all once again and thank you for your commitment to Ketchikan in whatever capacity you can afford; like votes, every little bit of help goes a long way!
