Hello,

My name is Trevor Shaw, and I’m running as a write-in candidate for Borough Mayor. I currently serve as a member of the Ketchikan School Board; I was elected to a 3-year term in 2013. I am the youngest person elected to public office by the Ketchikan voters, and I’m currently the youngest elected official in the State of Alaska. I graduated from high school in May of 2014 as a University of Alaska Scholar. I am now a freshman college student, studying Business Administration at the University of Alaska Southeast here in Ketchikan.

I’ve been involved in community service ever since I was 9 years old. Public service is my passion; people matter most to me. That’s why I entered the race for Borough Mayor as a write-in candidate. After spending weeks listening to the voters, the conclusion was clear: members of the community were not happy with the current field of candidates. The voters wanted a candidate who would be the common-sense, consistent, strong Mayor that they wanted. I decided it was time to stand up for my community and be that candidate.

It’s Time for Responsible Leadership

I’m running for Borough Mayor because I want to be the Passionate Leader that Ketchikan deserves. I’ve always been one to say no to the status quo, and do what is right. As a young adult, I’m always thinking about what I can do to make the future better. As a public servant, I know the issues and can see the work that needs to be done to build a stronger future for the community I love. Ketchikan should be a viable community that is attractive for business and new families. I’m running for Mayor because I want that to be more than a statement; I want it to be reality.

The City and the Borough have a combined total of $180,000,000 (yes, million) in bonded debt. In a community the size of Ketchikan, that comes out to $13,000 in debt per Ketchikan resident… To me, this unacceptable. I’m running for Borough Mayor because Ketchikan needs long-term strategic in order to make sure we have a sustainable future for ourselves. Honestly, it’s okay to want something better for your community. As Borough Mayor, I work tirelessly to keep local government spending under control in a responsible manner. My record as a School Board member has been one of transparency and fiscal conservatism; I’ve never voted to spend more than what the board has budgeted.

Out of the three candidates running for Borough Mayor, I’m the only one who stood up against raising taxes on the City of Ketchikan in 2013. In our community we don’t have a revenue problem, we have a spending problem. Let me be clear, the people of Ketchikan are not an at-will source of revenue to be exploited by politicians. You deserve a Mayor who will stand up and say enough is enough. Saying no can be hard but I have a record of having the courage to do so. When the going gets tough, my principles don’t change; I’m not afraid to make the hard decisions and do what is right for the community.

One of my opponents, Mr. Landis, voted to increase taxes during his tenure on the Borough Assembly. For me, raising taxes must be a last resort. If needed, as Borough Mayor, I will use veto powers to keep spending at a sustainable level.

Standing Up for Ketchikan

I have a strong record for standing up for the things that I believe in, and I believe in Ketchikan. I will always fight for what is right for my community. On my first day as a School Board member, I introduced a motion to push back against Alaska Senate Bill 90; this bill would have cost Ketchikan taxpayers an extra $1.4 million a year. I lead the fight against the bill because it was bad for Ketchikan. We were able to lobby the Alaska Association of School Boards, and they unanimously adopted our resolution opposing Senate Bill 90.

It took courage to stand up against the largest school districts in the state during our fight against Senate Bill 90. However, it was the right thing to do. I led the fight, we fought hard, and in the end we won. Ketchikan deserves a leader who will stand up and be a strong, consistent representative for community. That’s why I am running for Borough Mayor. I have the experience, the record, and the willingness to be your tireless advocate. My energy and passion levels run high, and I want to use them to benefit our community.

I’ve been at the frontline, here in Ketchikan, in the fight against state and federal government overreach. I have a strong record of working hard to protect and preserve our local government control. We don’t need someone out of Washington D.C. telling us how to cut our tree or run our businesses. As Borough Mayor, I won’t waiver in my absolute support of local control; because no one knows Ketchikan better than we do.

Building Strong Relationships

I’m running for Borough Mayor because I believe it’s time to build stronger, more positive relationships with other governing bodies in Ketchikan. It’s time to start reaching out to the City Council and the School Board to see what we can do to improve our relations with each respective body.

We need to sit down, and make sure that we are moving toward building a sustainable future for Ketchikan. We have to make sure that our efforts are efficient and productive; we must ensure that taxpayer dollars are being spent wisely. If we are going to make our community a viable and attractive place to live, we need to be willing to push past the politics. We have to work to build a friendlier environment for businesses and new residents. If we are going to do the best for our constituents, we have to build a solid relationship, founded on trust and integrity. This is what I will do as your Borough Mayor. This is what I’ve done on the School Board. I have brought people together to form the much needed Student Safety Committee, and I continue to work on building a stronger relationship with Borough Assembly as the Co-Chairman of the Assembly-School Board Liaison Committee.

The Right Direction for Ketchikan

Ultimately, I’m running for Borough Mayor to provide Passionate Leadership for Ketchikan’s Future. I want to push outside of the tunnel vision, and focus on building the future that Ketchikan deserves. As Borough Mayor, I will provide common-sense advice to the Assembly, and work to enact smart solutions. We have a lot of opportunity for growth in our community, and we can’t afford to let the bureaucracy and over-regulation to endanger those opportunities.

I’m running for Borough Mayor because I want to provide a new vision and a fresh perspective for the Borough. I have a record of dedication, courage, strong values, and integrity. Even in the face of fierce opposition, I stand up for what I believe in; and I believe in Ketchikan… We cannot tax and spend our way into prosperity. However, we can build a path to prosperity through strong leadership. I’m running for Borough Mayor to be that Leader.

That is why I humbly ask that you please write-in Trevor Shaw for Borough Mayor on October 7th.

Passionate Leadership for Ketchikan’s Future!

Trevor A. Shaw
