Trevor Shaw
Ketchikan School Board

Candidate Statement:

My name is Trevor Shaw, and I'm running for the Ketchikan Gateway Borough School Board. I'm running for School Board because I believe in Better Education, and I believe in our community. I have lived in Ketchikan for as long as I can remember. This is my home. The people that live in Ketchikan are more than just people, they are my friends. And friends are the family that you get to choose.

Ketchikan is a special and genuine community, and it is the place where I want to build my future. But I want to do more than just build my future, I want to build a Better Future for the Community that I care about. The people of Ketchikan deserve more than just the political status quo. You deserve a local leader who is ready to fight for what is right. That is the reason I'm running for School Board. I fight for the things that I am passionate about, and I am passionate about Ketchikan.

I have been involved in community service ever since I was 9 years old. This is the town that I love, and being able to serve my friends and neighbors is an honor beyond anything that I can express. I know the issues and I know the concerns of the people. People matter most. The reason I love community service is because I care. We can't let a political agenda get in the way of Better Education, because at the heart of education it is all about the that students we are educating.

I'm running for School Board to provide a Fresh Perspective and Sound Judgement to the process. I'm running to be the voice of the people; to be your voice on the School Board. I believe in Better Education and I believe in our community. Support Better Education in Ketchikan; Vote Trevor Shaw for School Board on October 1st.

Background:
I moved to Ketchikan in 2001 when I was 6 years old. I am a High School senior in the Ketchikan Fast Track correspondence program. I live here with my family of 6; My Mom and Dad and three little brothers (Gabe 11, Josiah 7, and Caiden 1). After I graduate from High School, I want to stay in Ketchikan and go to college either through the University of Alaska Southeast or through an online program. Ketchikan is my home and I want to stay and build my future here.

Statement of Issues:
The main issue that is most important to me is working to provide a Better Education for all of our students. I believe that this can be accomplished through the creation of a more positive learning environment in Ketchikan's schools. This environment should be centered around the basic principles of Creativity, Variety, and Opportunity. The School District is not here to change our students,  but to help them get where they're going in life. That is why I'm running for School Board.

Much of our current educational system is based on the same teaching structure that was popular in the 1950s and 1960s. This needs to change. As a School Board member I work to build a more dynamic and innovative School District. We need to start providing a more personalized education to our students, because all students are different. They have different needs, wants, interests, skills aptitudes, and personalities. As a School Board member, I would work to ensure that we a providing an education that best suits each individual student. This will increase individual growth and academic achievement within our district. We need a School Board member who has a plan. That is why I'm running. I have a sound, common-sense, plan that is going to benefit our students. I'm an advocate of Better Education, and I will put this plan into action as a School Board member. But I need your support. If you support better education, vote Trevor Shaw for School Board on October 1st.

Community Experience:
Friends of NRA Committee Member,  2005-Present
Ketchikan Youth Court Bar Association Member, 2011-Present
Ketchikan Youth Court Bar Association Vice President, 2012-2013
Board of Education Substance Abuse Committee Participant, 2012
Ketchikan Youth Court Bar Association President, 2013-Present
United Youth Courts of Alaska President, 2013-Present
Ketchikan Mule Deer Foundation Chapter Co-Chair, 2013-Present

Thank you for your time!

Sincerely,
Trevor Shaw
