(SitNews) - Alaska Governor Sean Parnell has ordered state flags to be lowered to half-staff on Tuesday in honor and memory of former state legislator Walter “Wally” Kubley. The former Ketchikan representative passed away Tuesday. He was 89.

“Sandy and I were saddened to learn of the loss of Representative Kubley,” Governor Parnell said. “He was always ready with a smile and warmth for everyone he met and will be remembered for his tireless service to the State of Alaska. We will keep his family in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.”

Following his tenure in the Alaska State House during the Second and Third Alaska Legislatures, Kubley was appointed senior advisor and legislative liaison to Governor Wally Hickel. He subsequently served as commerce commissioner under Governor Keith Miller. Kubley also worked as a lobbyist and was a community volunteer, most recently helping out during Juneau's Salvation Army annual Thanksgiving feed.

State flags will be lowered to half-staff on Tuesday, December 21. Flags will be raised to full-staff the following morning.
