AMHS is hiring, starts job fairs

Ketchikan, Alaska - The Alaska Marine Highway System is hiring and it has begun a five-city tour throughout Alaska and will hold a job fair in Ketchikan on December 11th.

"We've begun our hiring process for steward positions aboard our ships," said Lynn Stewart, an AMHS passenger services inspector. "Our first visit took place [Tuesday] in Valdez at the ferry terminal."

Four other cities will host the job fairs this month. They are:

  • Anchorage at the job center in midtown located at 3301 Eagle Street, Dec. 4. From 2:30 to 4:30 p.m.
  • Cordova at the AMHS terminal, 201 Orca Avenue, Dec. 3 from 9 to 11:30 a.m.
  • Ketchikan at the job center, 2030 Sea Level Drive, Dec. 11 from 9 to 11 a.m.
  • Juneau: To be announced.

AMHS is also seeking applicants for junior engineers, able body unlimited and oilers' positions.

The available positions are entry level, seasonal between May and September. Hired individuals will perform a variety of housekeeping, heavy cleaning or galley duties aboard AMHS vessels and will work amongst the traveling public.

There are several requirements applicants must meet for eligibility including:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Possess a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Be eligible to obtain a U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner's Document (MMD)
  • Able to lift and carry 60 pounds repeatedly
  • Able to work 12 or more hours per day and seven consecutive days
  • Upon job offer, must be willing to submit to a physical examination and drug test
  • Be eligible to obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC). TWIC information is available at www.tsa.gov/twic.
