Just as an observant parent of kids who once lived and played sports in this town, I'd like folks to consider the following: Do you realize that in Coffman Cove - a town much smaller than Ketchikan - they have a beautiful grassed ball field? The kids love to play on it and don't get hurt doing so.

My sons played ball here when they lived here and the idea that rocky fields are suitable for baseball or football seems a little dumb to me. Would YOU play ball on a solid sheet of gravel where if you fall or "slide" you take off all the skin on your legs or arms? Sports ARE an important aspect of growing up---my kids played down south and, for awhile, here. Our Rec Center is second to none. However, most of our outdoor fields SUCK frankly and I think the short sightedness of many of our officials and the "good old boys club" who hands out contracts to build some of these fields are to blame!
