High Fuel Cost
By Joseph J Chadwell

Fuel cost here in Ketchikan are out of hand, as compared to Juneau, Anchorage, Fairbanks, Homer, Tok or points south. As for the short term nothing may not be done to relieve these high cost; however we could look at the long term and plan accordingly.

Ketchikan may want to invest in the business of energy. Maybe we need to build a refinery here in Ketchikan to refine North Slope crude. Besides maybe providing a source of cheaper fuel for Southeast Alaska, it would also supply some badly needed high paying jobs. It would require some reexamining of priorities on our part, shifting of allocations and a strong will to make a project of this type happen. It not only would benefit Ketchikan but all of Alaska and America with greater refining capacity. This could really be a case of " When life gives you lemons, make lemonade".
