Ketchikan, Alaska - On January 1, 2005 carbon monoxide alarms will be required in all qualifying dwelling units throughout Alaska by Alaska Statute 18.070.095(a). The Alaska State Fire Marshal's Office has added carbon monoxide information to their website, www.akburny.com. A downloadable carbon monoxide pamphlet is available defining where carbon monoxide alarms are required.

The Alaska State Fire Marshal's Office suggests purchasing carbon monoxide alarms as holiday gifts for the homes of your family and friends. What a great way to show that you care about their safety. Carbon monoxide is an odorless, colorless, poisonous gas produced by incomplete burning of carbon based fuel burning appliances or engines.

If you live or spend time in a single family house, duplex, apartment, dormitory or group home that has a carbon based fuel appliance, an attached garage or carport or is adjacent to a parking space, the law requires the installation of a carbon monoxide alarm(s) to warn you and your family if carbon monoxide is present.

If you live or spend time in a RV, cabin or boat, installation of a carbon monoxide alarm(s) is highly recommended if the RV, cabin or boat meet the above conditions.

Examples of carbon based fuels:
Wood
Propane
Charcoal
Methane
Coal
LPG (liquefied petroleum gas)
Stove Oil,
Waste Oil
Gasoline, Kerosene
Diesel, Natural Gas
LNG (liquefied natural gas)

Examples of appliances or engines that may use carbon based fuel:

Heating appliances:

Furnaces, Space heaters, Fire places, Wood stoves, Water heaters

Motor Vehicles:

Cars, Trucks, SUVs, Motorcycles, Boats, Jet Skis, Airplanes, ATVs, Snow machines, Snow blowers, Snow machines, Lawn mowers

Cooking appliances:

If a non-electric space heater is used in any type of dwelling unit a CO alarm must be installed following the recommendations listed above.
