Voting for the best candidate: Tony Knowles
By Michael Spence

I have to respect Sarah Palin for her willingness to confront her fellow Republicans in the Alaska Legislature. And I wholeheartedly agree with her campaign co-manager, former governor Walter Hickel, when he says it is time for a new generation of leaders. The Republican Party is out of sync with much of the state and the USA with its top-down dictatorial fundamentalism and irreverence for the ethics laws. It does need new leadership.

Leadership for the state of Alaska is another matter. Tony Knowles has a proven record of letting constituents decide the important and controversial issues, not corporate and other special interests. He brings a well-reasoned and issue-oriented approach to government, one that encourages open process to achieve the best result for all Alaskans.

Tony also knows the importance of keeping Alaska s economy strong through private enterprise. This is in contrast to the economy of recent years in much of Alaska which is funded by a steady stream of federal dollars, courtesy of the deficit-spending Republican congress. The pork spending by the congress cannot continue, and regions that become dependent on it will be weaker, not stronger.

Alaska s gubernatorial election is not a forum to experiment with the possible reformation of a political party. It is the time to elect a proven leader for our state. That is why I am voting for Tony Knowles.

Sincerely,

Michael Spence
