Power corrupts but this is rediculous!

Letter to the Editor

One of my favorite characters out of history when I studied Political Science was renowned historian Lord Acton who lived and published at the end of the nineteenth century. Acton issued epic warnings about how any and all political power constitutes the most serious threat to liberty. He said, "The danger we face in a Democracy is not that a particular class is unfit to to govern. Every class is unfit to govern!" Lord Acton's most memorable pronouncement was stated, ."Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely." I can begin to understand people who cheat and rob for financial gain and I commiserate with individuals with true mental illness who do bad things because, "a voice told them to do it" but I don't get how lately so many of our best and brightest leaders have become just plain sleazy. Has it always been this way, revealed now because of twenty-four hour cable news and the Internet or is Armegeddon upon us as forecast by Lord Acton?

What is happening lately? A large number of Catholic priests have abandoned their vows of celibacy to seduce young boys to the consternation of the Church and even the Pope. Not to be outdone, some leading Evangelical Protestant leaders turned out to be drug dealing Gay whore mongerers while the Muslim clergy is rife with head chopping terrorists and several Rabbis are involved in adultery and even adultery leading to murder. In the corporate world we see huge frauds being committed by already wealthy CEOs. There is the Enron type fraud decimating the savings of millions of investors and the ubiquitous option ripoffs that seem to infect virtually every NASDAQ company ... even Apple, even Broadcom. What is the financial world coming to!? Congressmen (and women!) are busy not doing the people's business but seducing young pages and volunteers. Governors have illicit homosexual, adulterous affairs. Legislators play "footsie for cash" with Abrahmoff type lobbyists and a recent, well loved President dissolved into a young female employee seducer. Even a bunch of super model looking female teachers have been caught seducing pre-teen boys. This kind of stuff just didn't go on before ... Or did it?

Are we humans really this weak and we are just now learning the truth or is there something in the water or blowing in the breeze these days that begets all this sleaziness? What are we to do!
