"Virginia Smiley has excellent qualifications for this position," said Gilbertson. Smiley worked closely with the Pioneer Homes' first division director, John Vowell, who led efforts to integrate the six Pioneer Homes into DHSS. "Virginia will continue to strive to help older Alaskans achieve the highest quality of life with assisted living services in a safe home environment. I am confident Virginia can continue the work we began in 2003 to reorganize the department," said Gilbertson.
In addition, Smiley will oversee the development and opening of the Alaska Veterans Home in Palmer, at the Palmer Pioneers' Home. The Alaska Veterans Home is scheduled for completion in Fiscal Year 2006.
Virginia Smiley has served as Acting Director of Alaska Pioneer Homes since Vowell retired, and was officially appointed as Director on October 11, 2004. From 1999 to 2004, Smiley was Administrative Services Manager for the former Division of Alaska Longevity Programs. Prior to that, she was Home & Community-Based Program Manager for the Division of Senior Services from 1998 to 1999, and Assisted Living Program Manager from 1996 to 1998. She has a Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of Hawaii, and extensive graduate credits in public administration from the University of California at Long Beach.
