Anchorage, Alaska - Following a congratulatory phone call from former Governor Tony Knowles, Senator Lisa Murkowski declared victory Wednesday in her race for the U.S. Senate.

"It has been a long hard-fought race and a tough contest for all Alaskans and now it is time to move forward with a unified Alaska," Senator Murkowski said.

"I want to thank all of the volunteers the friends and the family who have stuck with us through this long campaign. They gave us the energy, the desire and the motivation we needed. I am proud of the campaign we have run. It was a campaign about a positive vision for Alaska and about all that we can achieve as a state. And it is a campaign that spoke to Alaskans."

Senator Murkowski also commented on her upcoming goals for her next term in the Senate including continuing the push to open ANWR, "I have been fielding phone calls all morning from my colleagues in the Senate, and in all of the conversation I have had, we were talking about ANWR," Senator Murkowski said noting that with wins across the country, there will now be 55 Republican Senators in the upcoming 109th Congress.

Senator Murkowski also noted that she is the first elected woman to represent Alaska in the United States Senate.
