KYC Holds 8th Graduation Ceremony

Ketchikan, AK - The Ketchikan Youth Court held it's 8th graduation ceremony on Friday, November 21, 2003 at the State Office Building. Eight students who successfully completed the Youth Court Fall Class 2003 and who successfully passed the youth bar exam met the requirements to be sworn in as Youth Court members.

Superior Court Judge Trevor Stephens officiated over the ceremony and explained the seriousness of the tasks ahead of the new Youth Court members. After being sworn in, each graduate was presented a certificate and a rose.

According to Ketchikan Youth Court Coordinator Gretchen Klein, "Ketchikan Youth Court has handled 125 cases from 2001-2003, trained over 100 students, and has only a 13% recidivism rate in repeat offenders. This is 12% better than the traditional juvenile court system." She said, "KYC has seen 7 youth members go on the college for criminal justice degrees."
