The Alaska Congressional Delegation announced this week a series of federal grants which were awarded recently totaling more than $6 million to local communities, groups, and agencies in the State of Alaska.

Among the federal grants announced, $805,000 was awarded to the Ketchikan Public Utilities by the United States Department of Energy for running a transmission line between Swan Lake and Lake Tyee. This will interconnect the electrical systems of Ketchikan, Petersburg, and Wrangell and allow Ketchikan to purchase surplus hydroelectricity from Lake Tyee.

The Department of Health and Human Services awarded $318,705 to the Kids' Corps, Inc. for their Head Start Program, and the Department of Commerce awarded $5,211,000 to the Seward Association for the Advancement of Marine Science for developing a comprehensive science program of the highest caliber to enhance understanding of the North Pacific, Bering Sea, and Arctic Ocean ecosystems and fisheries.
