Governor Will Not Move Forward With Elkins' Nomination to State Senate

Thursday - 8:20 pm

Juneau - Governor Frank H. Murkowski today announced that he has decided not to move forward with the nomination of Ketchikan resident Jim Elkins to fill the State Senate District A seat, vacated by Robin Taylor. Murkowski said that during the time intervening since the Elkins press announcement in mid-October, he has heard concerns from a number of District A constituents, concerns from members of the Senate majority, and that he had concerns of his own.

The Governor concluded that it would not be in the best interest of residents of Senate District A or the state for Elkins' nomination to be forwarded to the Senate. Murkowski said he will ask Republican District 1 and 2 committees for any additional names they would like to submit; otherwise, he will pick a nominee from the original list. The Governor said he would send a nomination to the Senate in very near future.
