Vote Keith Smith for Assembly

By Deborah Hayden

We have a fine slate of candidates for Borough Assembly in this coming Tuesday's election. Keith Smith is one I recommend highly for your vote. Keith will bring to the Assembly his amazingly broad and deep experience in many aspects of our community. He has been Executive Director of the Chamber of Commerce. He has been a teacher, a counselor and a radio broadcaster. He has first-hand experience in Ketchikan's natural resource economy from having worked as a commercial fisherman, as a fisheries researcher and as a forestry contractor.

When I arrived in Ketchikan in 2009, Keith was one of the first people I met in his role as a board member of the Community Foundation. He impressed me then with his wisdom and insight into the needs and dynamics of the community and has consistently applied this wisdom and insight in every encounter I have had with him. He understands the constraints and mechanics of being an entrepreneur through having owned and operated a farm. Keith has been active in the arts as Project Manager for the Performing Arts Center and in volunteering countless hours creating marvelous sets for, and acting in, First City Players productions. Currently, as Executive Director of Southeast Alaska Independent Living, he delivers services to, and advocates for people with disabilities and seniors.

As a Certified Economic Developer and Economic Development Finance Professional, I am deeply concerned with diversifying Ketchikan's economy, creating jobs and enhancing the quality of life. Keith Smith has personal, hands-on experience in all these areas and will apply that experience to the advantage of all Ketchikan residents when he serves on the Borough Assembly.

Vote for Keith Smith on Tuesday, Oct. 4.
