Legalizing Marijuana?

By Lucy Mahan

As I sift through the points and counter points of legalizing marijuana, a few questions remain unanswered.

Former Chief Asst. Attorney General for Alaska, Dean Guaneli, states:
Under Ballot Measure 2, many isolated villages would have no authority what so ever over marijuana.

How will villages be affected by their inability to control the selling and transportation of marijuana if they determine it is not healthy for their community? Does this proposal take into consideration the unique challenges that our rural villages face to keep themselves safe and healthy?

Another concern is with the chemical alteration of the plant for a more intense affect. This proposal doesn’t just legalize smoking the bud of the plant, but also the concentrated by-products. If you aren’t aware of the many ways it can be altered or ingested, take a moment to research and educate yourself on the transformations (i.e. marijuana shatter, crumble, and ear wax). Is this really healthy?

I am a life long Alaskan and am proud of our strong, independent state. I don’t understand why we’re voting on a proposal that doesn’t fit Alaska’s unique and specific needs. There are still too many unanswered questions and concerns.
