Re-elect Mark Begich

I appreciate the fact that Mark Begich supports adding Arts to STEM education, making it STEAM. I’ve heard him talk about how his son dreaded piano practice until he applied his math skills to the piano. All the sudden the piano made sense to him and he started to actually look forward to practicing. As a voice teacher and a musician myself, I see the benefit of overlap disciplines all the time and how learning music and art can help students learn other subjects better and build their confidence. Arts education increases integrated brain function and a well rounded education prepares kids so much better to excel after they graduate. I am happy to see our Senator understands that as well.

Mark Begich also helped Alaska get a waiver from the restrictive No Child Left Behind policy and – as a member of the Appropriations Committee – brought back more money for Title 1 schools.

While Mark Begich has been very vocal about what he’s done and plans to do for education, Dan Sullivan has been oddly silent about his plans -- both verbally and on his website. The only thing we do know is that many of his largest backers, including the Koch Brothers and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, support No Child Left Behind and vouchers for public schools. Since he hasn’t said anything else, I can only assume he supports those policies as well, which is extremely troubling.

Please support Mark Begich for re-election, who we know will work towards making sure all students get the best education possible.

On a side note, I have many friends who do not share my political beliefs. But we support each others right to have those beliefs and agree to respectfully disagree. I only wish it was so with the current political climate.
