Alaska Construction & Maritime Career Days Visits Ketchikan

(SitNews) Ketchikan, Alaska - Agencies will joing forces on Monday, Oct. 13th in Ketchikan to provide career and technical education opportunities for students at the Alaska Construction Career Days & Maritime Trades. The event will provide an opportunity for high school students to explore the diverse careers related to the construction and maritime trades industry.

Hosted by Vigor Alaska, this event provides an opportunity for high school students to explore and interact with industry experts as they learn about career paths within the construction industry.

Approximately 200 students from Prince of Wales Island, Metlakatla and Ketchikan are expected to attend. The sessions will last from 8:00 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Joining forces to provide this event, the 2nd Annual Southeast Alaska Construction Career Day, are the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities, Vigor Alaska, University of Alaska Southeast Marine Tech Center, Ketchikan Indian Community Southern Southeast Alaska Technical Education Center, and Ketchikan Gateway Borough School District.

The Construction Career Day event will include interactive exhibits that offer trade industry displays, heavy equipment demonstrations and activities such as hands-on participation with welding, electrical wiring, spike driving and drilling. Alaska is facing a critical shortage of workers in the construction fields. This event is an opportunity to introduce students to construction careers in Alaska. Participants will receive complimentary paper bag lunches, color coordinated hard hats, bags, safety glasses and more.

The Alaska Marine Highway System will host students in the Maritime Trades Career Day event aboard the MV Columbia where the students will participate in a scavenger hunt and tours of the engine room. Informational booths by the Coast Guard, Graham Neal, Kassan Tribal and the mining industry will be hosted in the ship’s dining room.

Sponsors include Alaska employers, training trusts and career and technical educators.
