Bears eating garbage

Bears can be nuisances in Ketchikan. We all know about the bear cub that wrecked the produce in Tatsuda's. While bears are cute from a distance, someone has to pick up the mess they make. It is our responsibility as citizens to pick up the mess they make and secure our garbage cans. As citizens in a bear populated area we need to maintain and secure our trash and pick it up after bears.

It can be annoying for people when bears eat our trash. But it can be deadly for bears if they eat your trash. You can get a ticket if you don't keep your trash cans secured when the bear gets into your trash. Once a bear gets into your trash once they probably get into your trash again and more frequently. If bears keep getting into your trash they could become a nuisance bear and possibly have to be shot. As humans we could avoid all that by keeping our trash secure.

Just like if we were fishing we wouldn't let our garbage get dumped in the ocean. As Alaskans we are blessed to see varied wildlife but if we let bears eat our trash we could be jeopardizing the lives of some of the wildlife we appreciate.

Sincerely,

Bryce Mattson
