Challenge Day
By Karen Eakes

Monday

Challenge Day is once again coming to Ketchikan! The Strengthening Cultural Unity taskforce of the Ketchikan Wellness Coalition in partnership with the Ketchikan School District and School Board is bringing this nationally recognized event to Ketchikan for the third year. We are pleased with the very positive response that the community has given to this organization and appreciative of the generous financial assistance that we have received over the years.

Challenge Day events bring people together for a day of powerful activity that breaks down social cliques and diminishes racial, social and cultural barriers by building a sense of belonging and connection between people. The goal of the day will be for each participant to begin to:

Notice what's happening in the world around them;
Choose actions that create positive change; and
Act as a living example of the power of contribution and active participation..

We would like to encourage all parents of Kayhi, Revilla and Schoenbar students to sign their children up for these special events happening at Ketchikan High School on October 11th and 13th and at Schoenbar Middle School on the 12th. Schoenbar is focusing on 7th graders as they did last year and the high school events are open to Kayhi and Revilla students at all levels on a first come basis.

Adult volunteers are an important component of Challenge Day as one of the goals is improving understanding and respect between youth and adults. We are soliciting volunteers at this time. Please contact Ketchikan High School or Schoenbar if you are interested and able to participate in one of these events. You will feel empowered to Be the Change!

Sincerely,

Karen Eakes
