The Alaska Marine Highway System (AMHS) ferries LeConte and Fairweather are set to return to service following regularly scheduled overhauls.

The Fairweather, a 235-foot catamaran type vessel, is slated to return to the fleet beginning Oct. 29, when the ship will sail roundtrip between Juneau and Haines, while the LeConte will begin sailing again Nov. 1.

Dry dock inspections were conducted on the fast vehicle ferry while the ship remained in Ketchikan. It also underwent inspections and repairs to its bow thrusters and jets. Several upgrades were also completed to the ship's navigational and safety equipment.

Crews finalized a $790,000 overhaul to the LeConte. Those upgrades included dry-docking for regulatory compliance inspections, various improvements in the ship's navigational and safety equipment, life saving gear and general machinery.

During the ships' absences, substitute service was provided by two Allen Marine vessels, the St. Aquilina and the Glacier.

Sailings aboard the Glacier and St. Aquilina have been added for Oct. 29 and 30 to cover the last weekend prior to LeConte's return.

The Glacier, which transports vehicles only, will depart the Auke Bay terminal Oct. 29 at 5 p.m. The ship will proceed to Hoonah and Angoon returning through Hoonah Oct. 30. It will depart Angoon at 8:45 a.m., arriving in Juneau at 11:30 p.m.

The St. Aquilina, transporting passengers only, will depart the Auke Bay terminal at 8:15 a.m., Oct. 30 to Hoonah, Tenakee, and Angoon returning through Hoonah and arriving in Juneau at 9 p.m.

"The replacement, contracted service provided by Allen Marine has been nothing short of outstanding and we're very grateful to them for the service they provided to AMHS customers during the two ferry overhaul periods," said Capt. John Falvey, General Manager, AHMS.
